Position Overview

The Lead Surfaces Scientist is a key member of Novelis' global core R&D organization having strong fundamental understanding and hands-on experience in characterization of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of surfaces of wide range of materials including metals, polymers, ceramics, etc., along with sheet metal products and processing technologies. The role also requires experience in computational and experimental analysis of sheet metal, polymer and ceramic surfaces and in-depth understanding of corresponding interfaces between the surfaces and adhesive joints and coatings. Surface functionalization for corrosion and high performance joints, texturing, optics for surfaces as well as computational modeling of complex nano or molecular/atomistic systems relevant to surface reactions and corrosion would be desirable.

The lead scientist will work with and lead multi-disciplinary teams to combine surface, interface and advanced characterization techniques with other approaches for maximum impact on the speed and depth of materials research and development. The lead scientist will also support research activities seeking to improve processes for Novelis' current aluminum flat rolled products with enhanced combinations of performance, efficiency and recyclability.
Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Investigate scientific principles and develop novel concepts in the field of surface functionalization and characterization of metals, ceramics and polymers with advanced measurement systems for developing new product concepts as well as improving the surface dependent performance of current and future Novelis products.
  • Deliver innovation projects with novel surface solutions and competency development in surface and interface characterization and identifying operating mechanisms to create business impact and value within Novelis and customers.
  • Lead development and deployment of advanced techniques and methods to work on materials and surface challenges by driving root-cause analysis initiatives, interpreting data, presenting results and making positive recommendations in collaboration with cross-functional value streams and customer-plant support teams.
  • Participate in project planning and lead assigned project work packages, manage resources, delegate tasks and prepare timelines & project tracking to meet the project goals.
  • Depending on project needs, participate as individual contributor or lead small groups of multi-disciplinary scientists/engineers and manage their activities to achieve the project goals.
  • Support initiatives for development of internal and external partnerships with subject matter experts to identify, develop and capture emerging technologies in surface & interface science of wide range of materials and material systems.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a closely related field.
  • Minimum typical experience of 10+ years after PhD completion in industrial R&D or in partnership with industry.
  • Proven track of leading and successful Surfaces & Interface Science projects with wide range of material systems. Good balance of experimental experience in surface tailoring for improving chemical, physical and mechanical characteristics for higher performance as well as modeling experience in atomistic and nano-level for adhesion, corrosion, etc.
  • Experience in characterization and measurement techniques for the characterization of surfaces of different materials including metals, polymers, ceramics by using SEM/EDS, XPS, TEM, FTIR, ToFSIMS, XRT, OES, AFM, SKP, etc.
  • Direct experience in developing advanced materials and surfaces for automotive and transportation, beverage cans, packaging, architectural sheet, and consumer electronics would be desirable.
  • Technical leadership experience in an R&D setting with demonstration of good project management and technical communication skills.
  • Broad science and engineering background and ability to connect knowledge across multiple disciplines.
  • Work independently and within teams. Conduct clear and concise communication with colleagues and supervisors through periodic updates, written reports and technical meetings.
  • International outlook and desire to travel to other Novelis or customer locations.
