POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking an experienced Lead Research Lab Tech to join our research group in the Ocular Genomics Institute at Mass Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School. Our research program is focused on inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs), which are important causes of vision loss. Genetic therapies such as adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated gene therapy show great promise for treating IRDs. We are looking for an experienced cell and molecular biologist to join our team to investigate the genetic causes of IRDs, and to test potential genetic therapies to reduce or prevent vision loss from specific genetic forms of IRDs. The successful candidate will carry out a broad range of cell and molecular biologic experiments using cell and animal models of disease. Responsibilities will include planning and designing experiments, evaluating results and drawing scientific conclusions, preparing results for publications/presentations. The responsibilities will also include training junior lab members, and shared laboratory management duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Independently performs non-routine, highly specialized experiments
  • Participates in the design and modification of research protocols
  • Develops research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives
  • Performs data analyses, troubleshoots technical problems with experiments
  • Synthesizes and interprets results, prepares verbal and/or written status reports
  • Supervises and trains junior team members in specialized research techniques
  • May contribute to grant proposals and manuscripts
  • Work independently and as part of a team, with strong communication skills
Ability to identify problems and develop solutions

Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelors' degree in biology or physical science
  • 3-5 years cell and molecular biology research experience, with associated computer skills

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Lab setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possible lifting of 10 to 20 lbs., depending on nature of chosen project(s).
