Founded over 130 years ago as a well drilling contractor, Layne is one of the largest, most experienced water service companies, serving hundreds of municipalities, industrial companies, agribusinesses, mining companies and the world. We supply well drilling and construction for dewatering wells, monitor well completions, environmental and geotechnical drilling, water well rehabilitation, pumping equipment sales and services, mineral exploration drilling, hydrologic investigations and water treatment technologies.

General Summary

This position of Field Mechanic I is integral to the overall Water Resources maintenance strategy. The purpose of the position is to carry the maintenance program into the field and to provide a prompt response to equipment failures and breakdowns.
Essential Job Accountabilities

  • Manage crews, service trucks and equipment to meet the field requirements.
  • Operate equipment and tools involved in shop and field repairs
  • Direct and supervise personnel and coordinate shop operations
  • Troubleshoot and repair various electrical assemblies
  • Rebuild, replace or repair drill rigs parts and ancillary equipment
  • Assign priority and process repair work orders
  • Evaluate and recommend all repairs with cost estimates
  • Oversee completion of all repairs
  • Oversee shop fabrication and assembly operations
  • Locate and requisition parts for repairs
  • Establish preventative maintenance schedules
  • Understand and implement laws and regulations on transportation and safety
  • Keep shop equipment and tools in safe operating condition
  • Maintain accurate information for payroll reporting
  • Arrange contract repairs when work not able to be completed by shop personnel
  • Travel required, often with overnight stays. Up to 80% of time.
  • Education
    • Technical school preferred.
    Work Experience
    • Minimum 3 years of experience in diesel and hydraulic equipment maintenance and repair
    Knowledge, skills, and abilities
    • Good communication skills.
    • Good organizational skills.
    • Ability to drive service truck to equipment locations.
    • Ability to work outside normal working hours.
    Physical Demands

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to operate a small hand tools. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Working outside in all weather conditions required.

    Additional Requirements/Skills
    • Advanced knowledge of hydraulic systems
    • Ability to work irregular hours and respond to afterhours emergency calls as needed
    • Previous drilling experience and knowledge of work industry a plus
    • Strong organizations skills
    • Class B CDL and a Clean driving record
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Forklift, crane and welding certifications a plus.
