Applications are now being accepted for the Infrastructure Specialist Associate and Infrastructure Specialist positions for Student Affairs Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Infrastructure Specialist Associate

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE SPECIALIST ASSOCIATE:

This position provides workstation and software support to Student Affairs units.

  • Hardware and System Software
    • Installation and configuration of workstations, mobile devices, software
    • Maintain patching, security, and other endpoint management of workstations and servers
    • Assist with the maintenance of administrative infrastructure, including file, print, web, database servers, and specialized vendor applications
    • Serve as a resource for major software version upgrades and replacing outdating technologies with new and current technologies
  • Support
  • Provide assistance to help desk operations by providing application and desktop support to customers
  • Work within defined policies and procedures to solve user or system problems, including those that require solutions with originality and/or ingenuity
  • Identify problems to be solved, and escalates appropriately
  • Assume appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit
  • Complete most work with limited supervision, appropriately judging when to seek assistance or guidance from subject experts or management
  • Other Duties

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE INFRASTRUCTURE SPECIALIST ASSOCIATE:

Required:

Two years of progressively more responsible work experience in an IT-related profession***, including:
  • Experience providing application and desktop support to end-users
  • Experience troubleshooting Windows workstation operating systems, applications and hardware
  • Experience using tools and resources to optimize the delivery of technology services to the end user, such as with endpoint management, imaging, or centralized solutions
  • Experience supporting mobile technology platforms (Examples: tablets, iPads, smartphones)
***60 semester hours or Associate's degree in Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline can substitute for one year of experience

***90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline can substitute for two years of experience

Preferred:
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Active Directory, including group and object management, policy tasks, access control and authorization
  • Experience with Apple OS and iOS in an enterprise environment
  • Experience with Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) servers and services
  • Experience with digital signage and/or CCTV systems
  • Experience in a higher education environment
  • Experience supporting essential network services (DNS, DHCP, and/or VPNs) and diagnosing network problems

Successful Candidates will have:
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems, utilize good organizational skills, and comfortable managing multiple priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to a variety of audiences (management, peers, users and vendors), as well as the ability to draft proposals and documentation

Infrastructure Specialist

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE SPECIALIST:

This position provides end user, workstation, server, application, and systems support to Student Affairs units.
  • Hardware and System Software
    • Serve as technology consultants and innovators for Student Services staff and departments
    • Install and configure workstations, servers, and mobile devices
    • Maintain patching, security, and other endpoint management of workstations and servers
    • Maintain critical administrative infrastructure, including file, print, web, database servers, and specialized vendor applications
    • Implement migration plans for major software version upgrades and replace outdated technologies with new and current technologies
  • Support
  • Provide assistance to help desk operations by providing application and desktop support to customers
  • Document policies and procedures as necessary
  • Support unit needs using campus resources such as telephone and email
  • Work within defined policies and procedures to solve user or system problems, including those that require solutions with originality and/or ingenuity
  • Identify problems to be solved, and escalates appropriately
  • Implement system and data security best practices
  • Participate and support software development projects, from conception through testing, implementation, and documentation
  • Assume appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit
  • Complete assigned individual projects with durations of 2-6 months
  • Complete most work with limited supervision, appropriately judging when to seek assistance or guidance from subject experts or management
  • Security

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE INFRASTRUCTURE SPECIALIST:

Required:

Five years of progressively more responsible work experience in an IT-related profession***, including:

  • Experience with database design and optimization

  • Experience supporting mobile technology platforms (Examples: tablets, iPads, smartphones)
  • Experience supporting enterprise Exchange and Outlook
  • Experience supporting Skype for Business
  • Experience in a higher education environment
  • Equivalent Microsoft Certification to MCSE

This is a full-time Civil Service Information Technology Technical Associate position appointed on a [12]-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after May 21, 2021. Salary is commensurate with experience.
