The Department of Facilities - Compliance has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Hospital Safety Officer to work in the Coral Gables campus.

Responsible for overseeing management of the Physical Environment program, in order to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and personnel. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs and initiatives for the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics (UMHC). Manages the Environment of Care (EC) Safety and Life Safety Plans to minimize hazards and reduce risk of injury to patients, visitors, third party vendors and employees is a major responsibility of this position. Incumbent serves as a designated Safety Officer and participates as an active member of the UHealth Environment of Care committee. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of the Safety & Compliance.

This position is directly responsible for all compliance activities as associated with the CMS conditions of participation and Joint Commission standards as outlined within the Life Safety, Environment of Care and NFPA standards across the entire UHealth System (UMHC & UMMG).

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS


  • Ensures that all Joint Commission guidelines for the Environment of Care EC, LS, and EM chapters at the hospitals and clinics remain compliant. This includes annual review and completion of the Periodic Performance Review (PPR).

  • Coordinates and oversees all AHCA, CMS, OSHA and all other applicable AHJ standards.

  • Coordinates activities of the management plans within the Environment of care for the hospital and serves as the Safety Officer. Co-chairs Environment of Care Committee with the Director of the Environment of Care Compliance.

  • Ensures safety and facility quality control is in compliance with local, federal, state regulations and provide consultations.

  • Reviews and track data provided within the Environment of Care program to make ongoing improvements.

  • Participates in hospital committees as required by the Director of Safety & Compliance. This includes community involvement regarding emergency preparedness and serve as consultant to other departments.

  • Reviews and update policies regarding the Environment of Care, Life Safety, Fire Safety and Emergency Management.

  • Participates in performance improvement and information management activities. Coordinates and participates with multidisciplinary team to conduct ongoing safety tours of clinical and nonclinical areas.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor's degree in relevant field such Safety, Occupational Health, Fire Science or Environmental Science is required.

Certification and Licensing:

Certified Hospital Safety Officer (must be obtained within 6 months of employment)

Certified Hospital Life Safety Specialist (must be obtained within 6 months of employment)

OSHA 30 General Industry Certification (must be obtained within 6 months of employment)

OSHA 30 Construction Industry Certification (must be obtained within 6 months of employment)

FEMA IS-100(HCb), IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 (must be obtained within 6 months of employment)

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant healthcare safety experience required

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

  • Ability to establish department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of the other Safety Officers.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

  • Knowledge of building and construction activities with additional expertise in fire protection devices, building materials, exit design, wall ratings, lighting, occupant capacity and combustible material storage

Department Specific Functions

Leads internal safety audits and inspections in all assigned areas of the organization. Performs risks assessments, develops, and coordinates enforcement of interim life safety measures. plans and infection control risk assessments. Performs Pre-Construction Risks Assessments (PCRA) in partnership with Infection Preventionists, Project Managers and Department Managers. Oversees all on-site safety inspections, assisting inspectors and surveyors in the performance of their duties; provides reports as required in follow-up to surveys, inspections, and audits. Ensures safety issues identified through inspections, audits, AHJ, or the Environment of Care Committee are documented, monitored, and completed with results reported back to the committee. Actively participates in safety management of the Environment of Care Committee. Performs annual evaluation of the EC Management Plans to ensure that the objectives, scope, performance, and effectiveness of each of the plan are evaluated based on analysis of incident reports and other information. Serves as a subject matter expert for OSHA compliance to all areas of the organization and assists all departments in complying with the fire safety standards. Responsible for creating a Plan of Correction when safety deficiencies, building code violations, or safety failures area identified. Responsible for developing and implementing safety education and training to all facility and UHealth staff. Performs other duties as assigned.

As a result, during the Influenza ("the flu") season (September through April), the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine requires all employees who provide ongoing services to patients, work in a location (all Hospitals and clinics) where patient care is provided, or work in patient care or clinical care areas, to have an annual influenza vaccination.
