Position & Client Overview:

One of our clients is a large and prestigious laboratory organization with locations all across the country. They seek a grossing technician to work a 26-52 week assignment at their large 781-bed medical center client near the Big Apple (NYC).

Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of a pathologist, duties may include preparation, gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens.

Skill Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures
  • Good knowledge of histologic techniques
  • Calibrate, operate, troubleshoot and maintain the equipment
  • Dexterity and good hand-eye coordination are required to collect and prepare specimens
  • Lab safety and infection prevention is of paramount importance

Responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing, according to policies and procedures
  • Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling
  • Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification
  • Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings and sutures are mentioned
  • Capable of grossing moderate to high complex/complicated specimens under direct and indirect supervision, as applicable to training and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to handle broader range of specimens with indirect supervision (i.e., gall bladders, oriented skin lesions, etc.)
  • Escalate non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to pathologists' assistants
  • Record measurements, weight, volume and any abnormal findings as applicable
  • Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing

Education, Certification, & Experience:
  • Associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR
  • Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours, including 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR 24 semester hours - 6 chemistry, 6 biology and 12 chemistry, biology, medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • Two (2) years of experience
