The Proposal/Grant Writer in Institutional Advancement furthers Meharry's mission through the development of individual donor, corporate and foundation proposals to strategically advance campaign major gift, and planned gift solicitations. This position reports to the Director, Donor Communications, and will work closely with the Campaign Director as well as the Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations to secure annual support as well as support for Campaign 150, the College's $350 million capital campaign, which is scheduled to close in 2026, the 150th anniversary of Meharry.

Daily Operations

  • Draft proposal and report narratives, incorporate edits, and finalize for submission.
  • Identify all supplemental materials and information required for each proposal or report, preparing and uploading them as appropriate.
  • Manage a calendar and tracking system to ensure that all deadlines are anticipated and met.
  • Design and implement a proposal development strategy for individual leadership and major gift donors that ensures timely, highly individualized and well-crafted solicitation proposals.
  • Develop deep content knowledge on Meharry's vision, programs, and funding priorities across campus, including through meetings with and information/data requests of key faculty and staff leaders.
  • Maintain accurate and current files, including updated frequently requested grant supplemental materials.
  • Build a strong network of collegial relationships with Meharry communications, advancement, and departmental representatives across the College to collect the information needed to prepare accurate and detailed funding proposals and final reports.
  • Draft grant thank you letters and other donor acknowledgements and stewardship reports as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Excellent management, planning, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be a persuasive advocate for Meharry's priorities and present information in a clear and compelling manner to a variety of constituencies, primarily in writing.
  • Ability to use current desktop office technologies proficiently and to adapt to and use future technologies.
  • Knowledge and utilization of relevant grant and funding databases.
  • Sound judgment, tact and ability to handle highly confidential information.
  • Strong initiative and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks under deadline pressures in a high-volume office.
  • Authentic appreciation for the role that Meharry Medical College plays as a premier medical college and a Historically Black College and University institution.

Required Education and Experience
  • Two to five years of writing experience, preferably as a grant writer or in a similar communications role.
  • A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience would be an advantage.
