Job Description
The Art Department at Wellesley College seeks a senior historian of art, architecture, and/or design to assume the Grace Slack McNeil Chair in American Art. American Art is broadly defined as the arts of the Americas from ancient times to the present day with both trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific entanglements. The successful applicant must have a distinguished record as a teacher and a publishing scholar. The search is open to scholars at the associate and full professor levels only. Scholars specializing in any areas of American art are invited to apply; The department is particularly interested in candidates in architecture . The McNeil chair holder will be a full member of the Department and will be expected to take part in all department activities, committees, and advising; they will also rotate into the Department chair position as needed. They will offer four courses per year, have access to substantial funds to support research and other scholarly activities, and have the agency to reshape our offerings in American art in dialogue with other department faculty, the Davis Museum, the American Studies Program, the New England Arts and Architecture program, and other campus groups. The McNeil Chair serves as Co-Chair of the annual Deerfield-Wellesley Symposium in American Art.
