Job Description

SUMMARY
Responsible for the overall conduct and success of the Genotyping Laboratory at SGS North America, Inc. in Brookings, SD.
REPORTING LINE
Directly reports to the Director of Operations.
JOB FUNCTIONS

• Take on customer service projects in which state-of-the-art technologies, such as array-based SNP and KASP/TaqMan genotyping are used to analyze molecular markers for plant breeding and research.
• Familiar with current techniques for plant molecular marker detection and especially their analysis (Illumina Infinium and Axiom).
• Effectively manage customer projects and coordinate the cooperation within the team and with the partner lab at SGS IF Trait Genetics in Germany.
• Monitor the implementation, quality, and costs of the local services based on defined quality criteria and deadlines.
• Act as the first point of contact in North America for customers regarding ongoing and new projects.
• As part of a highly skilled intercontinental team, you translate innovative ideas into new services, especially for optimized genotyping arrays for field, vegetable, and ornamental crops.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• M.S. or Ph.D. in biology, biotechnology, or agricultural sciences (e.g. plant breeding) is required.
• Have qualified knowledge in the field of plant genetics and/or plant breeding.
• Experience working in the field of high-throughput genotyping and molecular analysis of especially plants or animals or in the human system.
• Experience in communicating with customers and colleagues.
• Experienced in project management.
• Willing to interact, cooperate, and visit customers and other SGS laboratories, especially SGS IF TraitGenetics in Germany.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
• Language Skills: English
• Mathematical Skills: Advanced/Highest level of knowledge required
• Reasoning Skills/Abilities: Advanced level required
• Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to gather and review resources and select and synthesize data for reports and other written materials.
• Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to make sound suggestions or recommendations.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills needed to balance multiple projects and changing priorities.
• Ability to display a strong sense of urgency and good judgment.
TRAVEL
• Up to 10% (possibly more for training).

• This job operates in a professional laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones, but also laboratory equipment, including balances, shakers, extractors, hoods, etc..
