Excelsior College, a leading not-for-profit, distance learning institution, invites nominations and applications for the role of Founding Dean of the College of Nursing & Health Sciences (CNHS). Following a long and successful history of leadership in nursing education, Excelsior has committed to an ambitious and innovative path forward that centers around the expansion of its health sciences offerings to include a wider array of cutting edge health professional programs and educational opportunities. In this role, the Founding Dean of the College of Nursing & Health Sciences will oversee all operations and academics of the new College of Nursing and Health Sciences and will be responsible for setting a forward-looking vision, creating an inclusive and high-performing culture, and seeking to expand programmatic opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate level
With its main offices located in Albany, NY, Excelsior today enrolls over 16,000 students and employs approximately 600 adjunct faculty and 380 full-time faculty and staff. Comprised of three schools and 40 degree programs across six areas of study (business, health sciences, liberal arts, nursing, public service and technology), Excelsior offers associate, baccalaureate, certificate, and master's programs, and was recently ranked by Newsweek among the top 10 online college and universities in the nation. The launch of the new College of Nursing & Health Sciences coincides with a landmark event in the history of Excelsior College. On August 1, 2022, Excelsior College will officially become Excelsior University.
Reporting to and working closely with the Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs of Excelsior, Christopher Cassirer, the Founding Dean is the senior leader responsible for overseeing and stewarding all academic affairs and administrative operations of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The newly formed College of Nursing and Health Sciences will include the School of Nursing, the School of Allied Health, and the School of Mental Health Counseling. The Founding Dean will oversee a broad range of areas and responsibilities, including clinical experiences, academic planning, student engagement, and faculty affairs.
As an integral member of the senior leadership team, the Founding Dean will work closely with the President, Provost, senior leadership, other Deans, faculty, and community partners to advance the need of the College by establishing a strategic vision informed by the institution's strategic plan. The Dean will be responsible for expanding flagship program areas, as well as introducing new offerings (including doctoral programs) to the academic portfolio of the College to broaden the institution's reach both domestically and globally. In addition, the Dean will oversee academic quality, accreditation and assessment standards, and ensure strong outcomes regarding clinical placements and success in licensure exams across all disciplines. The Founding Dean will also play an essential role in effectively engaging alums, community leaders, and other constituencies in support of strategic priorities and the creation of partnerships.

The ideal candidate will be a builder with a proven track record of experimentation, innovation, and program growth. The successful candidate will be a seasoned leader with a record of accomplishments and progressive leadership experience in higher education, educational technology, or a complex healthcare organization. Experience and core expertise in strategic planning, management of academic programs, overseeing direct reports with a variety of responsibilities, and student success are essential.
The ideal candidate will have a commitment to Excelsior's mission and the students it serves, knowledge of health professional education and clinical requirements, an understanding of current trends in adult, professional, and online education, and knowledge of and experience in online and technology-enabled learning. The successful candidate will be a team builder and people leader with high emotional intelligence and a strong commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive learning and working environment.
A Doctoral/Terminal degree in nursing, the health sciences, or a related field is required for this position.
