Flexo Press Operator

Job Overview:

The Press Operator is responsible for supporting goals of the plant in efficient operation of a flexographic press, printing labels to specification ensuring consistent quality.

This is a technical and skilled position requiring strong mechanical aptitude and previous flexographic press experience. Candidates should have solid print environment experience, strong math skills, good attendance, and a desire to grow and learn with print career focus.

Job Duties:

  • Review job ticket for required processes and customer expectations.
  • Enter job order information, (i.e. roll track numbers, job specification, etc.). Set specifications on press. (Measurement accuracy and attention to detail required). We utilize Radius Shop Floor Data Collection (SFDC).
  • Exhibit safety-first attitude from proper PPE compliance to maintaining an environmentally safe and hazard-free work environment. Active participation on the Safety Team. Compliance with all workplace and product safety standards required.
  • Inspect jobs; flag/remove defects using strobe light detection.
  • Continuously check job for quality.
  • Perform and support preventative press maintenance.
  • Comply with customer and MCC QA specifications, including but not limited to handling procedures, paperwork requirements, etc. Compliance with all data integrity, product safety, and GMP standards required.
  • Complete QA sheet and associated documentation and verify prior to supervisory approval for job.
  • Complete roll-end section of Quality Control checklist and verify as each master roll is run on press.
  • Responsible for following established processes and procedures related to safety, quality and equipment.
  • Responsible for cleanliness of machinery, work space organization, light equipment maintenance and troubleshooting issues as applicable and safe to do so.
  • Perform required test runs.
  • Assist in the performance of external make-ready operations in preparation for changeover activities as needed.
  • Assist with clean-up activities following changeover; clean ink pans and ancillary equipment, strip plates from cylinders, conduct wash-up, etc.
  • Cross train Press Assistant to run press through breaks/lunches as time allows. Mentor employees to support growth within plant.
  • Compliance and follow-through with Lean initiatives.
  • Participation in department meetings, process improvement events, training, and safety program as scheduled.
  • Responsible for working required overtime.

Experience/Skills Required:

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of printing processes and previous experience as a Flexographic Press Operator
  • Ability to run press independently, assist in press set-up and clean-up activities.
  • Ability to safely lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs., 20+ feet in distance on regular basis, and 75 lbs+ occasionally.
  • Ability to work with water-based ink, UV ink, solvents and various print-shop chemicals
  • Proven ability to understand and operate in a safe manner, roll lifts and press equipment.
  • Proven commitment to the business (must not be on discipline for attendance, performance, or attitude)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate and interact well with others (verbally and written form); seen as a team player
  • Ability to read and understand a job ticket in English, without assistance.
  • Ability to read a ruler and understand measurements (will take a ruler and math assessment)
  • Ability to enter data in the computer
  • Self-motivated with the ability to stay focused and follow instructions
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time (typically 8, but could be up to 12 hours/day)
  • Must be able to relate to, work with, and influence as needed, people at all levels within the organization
  • Assertive and solution-focused
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
  • (Warning: Viewing of the strobe light may trigger epileptic seizures in persons with photo sensitive epilepsy). May be expected to use other additional quality inspection tools such as AVT.

PHYSICAL AND/OR MENTAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to:
· Wear hearing, foot, eye and/or other personal protective equipment while in a manufacturing setting
· Continually stand for prolonged periods; frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, climb and balance; moderate to frequent walking
· Routinely use hands and fingers to handle, feel, grasp, and manipulate items; use hands and arms to reach for items in and around the press area; occasionally stoop or kneel while reaching
· Frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds
· Regularly push or pull objects up to 40 pounds
· Specific vision abilities include - close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to distinguish color variations, and ability to adjust focus
· Medium to loud noise environment
· Work flexible/varying schedules and hours as needed
· Work overtime as required by workload and customer mandated deadlines
