SUMMARY:

Supports United Heartland, Third Coast, Accident Fund and CompWest underwriting initiatives through the communication of sound underwriting strategies and development of underwriting standards. Helps shape underwriting appetite through approval and declination of class code and operation referrals. Works with Brand VPs, Divisional Directors, and Regional Directors to enhance profitability by identifying areas of profitable growth, retaining profitable business, and identifying opportunities for portfolio remediation.

RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:

  • Underwriting involvement 30-40% Provide over authority approvals for assigned underwriters and regions (Referrals: loss pick and expense deviations, employee concentration, coverage and exposure, premium authority, financial, loss prevention, and technical inquiries from BDCS).
  • 20-25% oversight of self-audit process, files reviews, and preparing brand underwriting audit reports and underwriting compliance.
  • 10-15% underwriting training, guideline development, and WC research.
  • 20%-25% letter of authority delegation, maintenance, and ensuring adherence to underwriting standards
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS FOR SENIOR FIELD UNDERWRITING ADVISOR:
  • Special projects.
  • GC and loss sensitive technical expertise
  • WC expert (proper classification, experience rating, bureau rules, risk selection, jurisdictional differences, hazard identification and controls)
  • May represent Brand on key committees
  • Underwriting quality audit lead
  • Complex problem solving
  • Maintenance and posting of WC resources on WC SharePoint site
  • Contributes effectively to cross functional teams (digital transformation, pricing tools)
  • Demonstrates proper collaboration in exchange of relevant elements with other disciplines (e.g., claims, loss control, actuarial)
  • Develops recommendations to change existing policies/programs
  • Demonstrates well-developed conflict management/negotiation and presentation skill
  • Provides assistance with training, development and mentoring of underwriting staff

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance or related field or the equivalent in relevant coursework and experience. Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged. CPCU designation strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Field Underwriting Technical Advisor:

Minimum eight years' experience in a Workers' Compensation or Property & Casualty underwriting environment. Thorough familiarity with Workers' Compensation or Property & Casualty underwriting concepts that provide the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities. One year demonstrated leadership in an Underwriting environment required.

Senior Field Underwriting Technical Advisor:

Minimum ten years' experience in a Workers' Compensation or Property & Casualty underwriting environment. Thorough familiarity with Workers' Compensation or Property & Casualty underwriting concepts that provide the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities. Three years demonstrated leadership in an Underwriting environment required.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED:

Field Underwriting Advisor:
  • Strong knowledge of workers compensation insurance and underwriting techniques
  • Knowledge of state jurisdictional requirements
  • In-depth knowledge of various rating plans and pricing mechanisms (retro's, retention, large deductibles)
  • Demonstrated superior judgment in evaluating and determining the proper pricing for prospective policyholders using corporate underwriting guidelines by accepting or rejecting risks for the purposes of issuing workers' compensation insurance coverage
  • Strong knowledge of appropriate jurisdictional workers' compensation laws, regulatory authorities, industry trends, and their impact
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating and accepting or rejecting workers compensation risks for the purposes of issuing insurance coverage
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policy documents, technical and financial information, and procedural manuals
  • Ability to take a lead role in large account new business acquisition and renewal retention strategies
  • Ability to train and mentor others
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities
  • Demonstrated expertise regarding territory or region
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows including spreadsheet applications and Microsoft Word
  • Strong organization, multi-tasking, and attention to detail skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Additional SKAs for Senior Field Operations Advisor:
  • Expert knowledge of workers compensation insurance and underwriting techniques
  • Extensive knowledge of claims and loss control concepts
  • Ability to handle the most difficult, complex, high-touch and labor- intensive customers
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental procedures, processes, and workflow
  • Ability to develop and facilitate technical training at an expert level
  • Extensive knowledge of appropriate jurisdictional workers' compensation laws, regulatory authorities, industry trends and their impact
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to train and mentor others
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an office setting with no unusual hazards. Minimal travel may be required with occasional overnight stays.
