In collaboration with the Learning Network of Minnesota (LNM), the University of Minnesota seeks an Executive Director who will provide learning technology services across all campuses of the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State colleges and universities system. This position is responsible for directing the Learning Network of Minnesota strategic planning effort and implementing the plan, as well as providing functional direction to the six regional consortiums of the Learning Network. The Executive Director requires strong leadership skills, an ability to balance stakeholders, an understanding of higher education and technical processes as well as an ability to mentor and coach Regional Directors to ensure high levels of operational performance and effectiveness.

The Executive Director reports directly to the Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the University of Minnesota as well as being responsible to the Vice Chancellor of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, and to the Learning Network of the Minnesota Board. The Learning Network Director has a budget authority of approximately $5 million.

The LNM provides Learning Technology services across all colleges and campuses of the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities systems. Within the six regions of the Learning Network are the five campuses of the University of Minnesota, and the seven universities, 30 colleges, and 54 campuses of the Minnesota State systems. The Learning Network enables students to have access to learning opportunities that otherwise would be unavailable at their college or in their geographic area.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Establish partnerships and collaborations with other service providers and key stakeholders. Stakeholders include system and collegiate level service providers, information and academic technology advisory groups, regional boards, state legislators, vendors, and partners.
  • Advise senior leadership of both the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State on matters related to the Learning Network of Minnesota.
  • Advise Learning Network regions on system-level programs that impact the Learning Network.
  • Guide and implement the Learning Network of Minnesota Strategic Planning efforts.
  • Serve as the liaison between the learning network regions, as well as between the regions, systems, and colleges.
  • Attend regional board meetings as needed. Serve as the staff lead for the Learning Network Board.
  • Develop and implement service delivery models. Delivery models require collaboration between the Learning Network, system office(s), and collegiate staff and resources.
  • Provide oversight and project management for Learning Network projects. Projects will often require collaboration with multiple service providers including system office(s), college members, state partners, and vendors.
  • Be a full-time senior collaborative leader with an integrative approach focusing on leading innovation.
  • Organize, host, and support cross-system teams (functional and advisory) in support of LNM services.
  • Lead development of standards and best practices. Examples include service delivery best practices, video classroom and video learning space room design, automation, software configurations, scheduling, instructional delivery, etc.
  • Oversee overall Learning Network spending and revenue. Analyze historical and other usage data for determining trends and other decision-making. Recommend funding models and regional allocations.
  • Lead or participate in vendor negotiations including the request for proposal processes. Manage multiple vendor relationships.
  • Determine metrics and reporting tools to best evaluate the effectiveness of the Learning Network.
  • Research new and existing technologies to determine possible future directions. Research existing technologies and procedures to determine more effective and innovative uses.
  • Ensure compliance in relevant areas such as accessibility and security.
  • Develop marketing strategies and tools for the Learning Network. Serve as the spokesperson and lead proponent of the Learning Network.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 12 years of related experience to include information technology managerial experience in a complex organization.
  • Experience with classroom/audio visual technology, educational technologies (e.g., learning management systems, video hosting systems, web conferencing systems, student response systems, and maker spaces).
  • Experience in collaborating effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior technical and non-technical leadership.
  • Experience implementing large-scale technology projects.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Experience with vendor negotiations and vendor management.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
