Job Summary

  • Diagnoses, tests, adjusts, and repairs mechanical systems of gas, electric and diesel powered engines and equipment, such as lawn mowers, utility vehicles, tillers, sod cutters, blowers, string trimmers, compressors, chain saws, sweepers, snow broom units, and tree spades.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts, such as water pump, fuel pump, steering components, hydraulic systems, brakes, exhaust system, cooling system, carburetor, thermostat, gears, solenoid, pistons, valves, crankshaft, PTO (power take off) systems, differentials, and transmission.
  • Adjusts points, valves, carburetor, distributor, and spark plug gaps using feeler gauges.
  • Grinds, reams, re-bores, and re-taps parts to obtain specified clearances using grinders, lathes, taps, reamers, boring machines, and micrometer.
  • Installs batteries and tires. Performs grinding and sharpening of blades. Performs preventative maintenance: change oil and filters, grease, and lubricate moving parts.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and prepares purchase requisitions. Maintains records of repairs and preventive maintenance
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance duties. Drives University vehicles as needed. Works any shift as needed. 24-hour a day emergency response as needed. Assists with snow removal activities as necessary. Works during inclement weather (i.e. snow and ice) when weather emergencies dictate that the department is needed to take care of the campus

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or GED
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 5 years of experience maintaining and repairing mechanical systems of both small and large motorized electric, gas, and diesel equipment
Combination of related educatoin and experience will be considered

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
