General Statement of Job:
The Environmental, Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EHS&S) Specialist provides technical support to the EHS&S Program by performing tasks associated with maintaining compliance with applicable environmental, health and safety regulations. The EHS&S Specialist will primarily assist the EHS&S program in conducting routine inspections and providing follow up tracking of corrective actions and daily coordination in safety compliance

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as it pertains to the health, safety, and productivity of workers and environmental impact of the organization’s operations.
  2. Responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating environmental health and safety procedures, programs, functions and activities.
  3. Plans, organizes, schedules, and conducts inspections of facilities, work areas, and equipment. Monitors site conditions, practices, and procedures for compliance with health and safety requirements.
  4. Selects and implements corrective actions for inspections and follows-up to ensure proper action has been taken.
  5. Ensures the proper calibration of safety equipment is done on an annual basis.
  6. Assists with the application of environmental, safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to resolve technical matters dealing with EHS&S requirements.
  7. Assists with the development of EHS&S practices, guidelines, and procedures to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses, and to control or eliminate potential safety hazards.
  8. Regularly tours College facilities to personally inspect operations and communicate with different departments.
  9. Analyzes potential worker safety risks in all college facilities and implements measures to mitigate them.
  10. Assists with the College-wide sustainability programs and/or projects in distinct areas of specialty such as, but not limited to: environmentally preferable procurement; resource conservation, and recycling; waste reduction; green building; sustainable transportation; and energy efficiency.
  11. Creates, modifies, and implements compliance tracking programs and record keeping systems.
  12. Responds to emergencies as required.
  13. Travels throughout the college district, as needed.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, or related field required.

2. At least three (3) years of experience in environmental health and safety or related field.

Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
  1. All applicants are subject to a national criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  2. Security Sensitive position: In addition, subject to federal background check.
  3. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license.
  4. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification, preferred.
