Job Purpose:

Provide technical knowledge/expertise to Toro product development teams responsible for new or existing products powered by internal combustion engines. This position supports engineering projects and emissions compliance activities for Commercial Division and works collaboratively with all Toro divisions to ensure certification and compliance to engine exhaust and evaporative emissions.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Lead internal Engine Specialization Group

  • Collaborate with and advise divisional engine compliance leads on with all engine product teams on product worldwide engine emissions legislation which impact company products.
  • Understand all worldwide legislation (existing, new, and pending) for exhaust and evaporative emissions which are applicable to engine powered divisional products. In collaboration with the legal department, research and answer questions relating to various legislated requirements.
  • Work with the Legal department to collaborate with organizations such as EPA, CARB, OPEI, EMA, and EUROMOT to help shape new legislation as it is being developed to ensure that any adverse effects on Toro's businesses are minimized.
  • Communicate to affected parties the relevant details of new emissions legislation including schedule and probable engineering complexity and cost.
  • Develop and maintain the company's body of knowledge for engine related information. This includes Lessons Learned, various Design Standards and recommended practices.
  • Conduct design reviews of engine installations in NPD designs and prototypes as requested by the project teams. Any team in any company division may request a design review.
  • Address engine related issues common to multiple groups or departments.
  • Support efforts to ensure a timely completion of signed engine application reviews.
  • Stay abreast of new technology and developments on internal combustion engines and emissions abatement systems. Help to decide when it is appropriate to integrate these improvements into the company's products.
  • Maintain a good understanding of customer's needs and wants in their engine powered equipment and work with engine suppliers and project teams to provide superior value in our products that customers will recognize and appreciate.
  • Establish and maintain a network of contacts (beyond our engine suppliers) who are involved with engine applications, testing, reliability, and regulatory compliance in industries similar to ours. Attend trades shows, conferences, and agency workshops to cultivate and maintain relationships with these contacts.

Engine Compliance Documentation
  • Lead Commercial division activities to ensure that purchased engines are certified and labelled properly to be legally compliant for all of the intended regions in which they will be sold. Gather and file certification documentation from engine suppliers for the Commercial division engines.
  • Lead Compliance Coordinators Group and collaborate with the assigned coordinators in the Commercial, RLC, SWS, Exmark and Boss divisions to ensure evaporative certification, compliance maintenance and documentation.
  • Work with project teams to compile CARB, EPA, and other necessary certification applications for evaporative fuel systems used on Toro products.
  • Maintain records of emissions compliance including emissions exemptions, temporary import bond, California field exemption etc.

Compliance
  • Work with the Legal department to help enforce the Commercial, RLC, SWS, Boss and Spellbrook's compliance to the worldwide legal requirements for engine related emissions.
  • Support the Legal Department in ensuring that all Toro division products are legally certified and labeled for the regions in which they are intended to be sold.
  • Serves as Toro's contact for emissions certification activities and questions. Works with legal department to craft required responses to the agencies.
  • Work with the Legal Department to determine acceptable regions for sale based on engine certification and fuel requirements

Provide technical support and expertise for engine related questions or issues:
  • Work with new product development teams to define requirements and sourcing options for engines needed for new products.
  • Assist test engineers and technicians in developing engine test plans and/or in evaluating and/or interpreting test data.
  • Work closely with Sourcing and Supplier Quality personnel responsible for engines to ensure that company gets the best possible quality and value from its engine suppliers.
  • Support Customer Care on engine related problems in the field including warranty problem resolution.
  • Serve as point of contact for company's engine suppliers regarding technical issues and issues common to multiple product groups or divisions.
  • Participate in shaping corporate long term engine supplier sourcing strategy. Visit suppliers, collect and summarize engine data, and analyze sample engines when appropriate to provide input to this decision making process.
  • Support manufacturing plants in resolving problems or answering questions regarding engines.
  • Support Logistics Department with obtaining necessary documentation for direct importation of sample engines from foreign countries.
  • Review and approve engine fuel and lubricating oil specifications, Operator's Manual recommendations, and Design Standards. Investigate alternative fuels and bio-based lubricant opportunities as these arise.
  • Provides direct communication with engine suppliers, which includes visits to overseas facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in an ABET accredited Mechanical, Aeronautical or Agricultural engineering program or equivalent required
  • Masters degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical or Agricultural engineering from a university with an ABET accredited undergraduate engineering program, preferred.
  • Professional Engineering license preferred
  • A minimum of three (3) years experience preferably in the powered equipment industry and more specifically in the design, development and/or the application of internal combustion engines.
  • Has demonstrated a high level of productivity with competency in the execution of duties.
