Electrician - Utilities Distribution
Job Summary
To coordinate and perform electrician work for Utilities Distribution, shop 25.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Working alongside other electricians, apprentices, and other assigned personnel in Shop 25, the electrician will perform the following:
a. Utilizes electrician skillset to perform the required tasks, reporting to the foreperson.
b. Exterior lighting system installation and maintenance.
c. Fire alarm system testing, operation, repair, and maintenance.
d. Emergency generator testing, repair, and maintenance.
e. Underground electrical utility locating.
f. Underground electrical duct bank installation and maintenance.
g. Medium voltage distribution systems and equipment installation, operation, maintenance, and repair.
h. Attend training, become efficient in working and resolving electrical distribution system issues.
i. Follows all the safety training and protocols provided by the department. - Interacts with campus customers, service department, other crafts, supervision, peers, other employees, and engineers to help meet the system and control requirements of the campus electrical distribution system.
- Follows workflow provided by shop foreperson, maintains tools, materials, transportation, and information necessary for their duties and successfully accomplishes work assignment.
- Helps Foreperson and Sub foreperson maintain records and assist in providing information for preparing reports on repairs accomplished, maintenance needs, preventive maintenance, and systems redesign.
- Follow and comply with prevailing codes of the university and University Building Standards as well as correct procedures and techniques.

1. Complexity This position requires the ability to multi-task on a routine basis due to the number of issues that must be dealt with daily.
2. Scope and Effect The workload associated with the position will require to work overtime when required.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
1. Physical Requirements
• Could require climbing ladders, working around all types of mechanical equipment (moving parts), and working from platforms.
• Could require considerable amount of walking, climbing, and making repairs in tight spaces.
• Usually requires manual dexterity.
2. Work Environment
• Work is generally in classrooms, labs, equipment rooms, vaults and sometimes steam tunnels. Environment contains heat, cold, dust, noise, and toxic chemicals.
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Electrician, with a minimum of five (5) years (60 months) of actual work in the trade, including apprenticeship or vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Electricians i.e. installing, maintaining, and/or repairing electrical systems, generators, transformers, motors and other electrical/electronic controls, electrical switchboard and other apparatus utilizing electricity, electrical, electronic and direct digital control systems, fire and alarm systems, and associated electrical, electronic and fiber optic equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to effectively plan, organize, prioritize work, and take feedback on completed assignments.
- Thorough knowledge of use of electrical tools and equipment.
- Knowledge, experience, and capability to perform construction, installation, repair and/or maintenance activities
- performed by Utilities electricians.
- Ability to understand and follow directions both orally and in written form that is concise and understandable.
- Thorough knowledge of safety procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, sketches, and blueprints.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the national electric code and University Building Standards.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1262 - Electrician position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 6/17/2024. Salary is $47.06 per hour.
