Position Overview

As a member of the Prototyping and Validation Team in our Automotive Customer Solution Center, the intern will work on an electric vehicle benchmarking project. The project objectives are to create a comprehensive map of advanced materials, technologies, and manufacturing costs in current battery enclosures for electric vehicles, using advanced benchmarking tools to survey key components and sub-systems in battery enclosures for electric vehicles, as well as working closely with Novelis cost and validation engineers.

The goal of this work is to enhance our understanding of competing materials (steel, extrusions, composites) and identify new technologies that can help overcome the competition and grow the use of aluminum sheet in battery electric vehicles.

Responsibilities & Qualifications
Responsibilities
  • Create a comprehensive map of materials and technologies used in current batter enclosures
  • In collaboration with Novelis cost engineers, create a cost estimate for key battery enclosure components such as frame/tub, cooling system, top cover, and bottom safety shield in current and future electric vehicles.
Qualifications
  • 3rd or 4th year student with a major in mechanical, design, automotive or materials engineering
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and Powerpoint
  • Basic understanding of engineering materials
  • Basic understanding of mechanical design
  • Basic understanding of automotive engineering
  • Collaborative and excellent English technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
Preferred Skills
  • CAE/CATIA
  • Basic understanding of metal manufacturing processes such as stamping and joining
  • Basic understanding of cost estimation in manufacturing
  • Familiarity with automotive reverse engineering and benchmarking tools
