Director of Student Governments, Auxiliaries, and Services

Hiring Salary Range: $105,204 - $110,000 /year

The Director of Student Governments, Auxiliaries, and Services is responsible for providing strategic direction in developing goals, setting priorities, coordinating efforts, supervising and funding of the unit, and providing a broad range of high quality, dynamic experiential learning opportunities that align with the University's strategic plan and Student Affairs goals.

The Director of Student Governments, Auxiliaries, and Services provides campus leadership in facilitating and promoting involvement in student governments, the student-initiated access, and retention centers, the student-initiated Sustainability Resource Center, and student-initiated services and commissions, and the Triton Food Pantry; as well as participation in other campus events, and campus life.

The Director is also responsible for UC San Diego's civic engagement initiatives related to voter registration and serves as the campus coordinator for local, state, and national elections. The Director provides strategic direction for the development, implementation, and assessment of the AS and GPSA websites and their 30+ web domains. These include, but are not limited to the AS Funding System, AS Travel System, and the AS Grade Distribution Tool. The incumbent initiates collaboration with other Student Life, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs units, community agencies, and donors to provide engagement opportunities that promote community-building, inclusion, wellness, and experiential learning for all students.

Responsible for administering a nearly 10 million dollar operating budget across 5 subunits; oversees a staff of 11; supervises 5 full-time employees, 2-5 part-time/casual employees (graduate assistants), and 200+ student employees. Additional sources of funding include: UCOP allocations for collaborations, SAPEP Funding, and Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs allocations for collaborations.

Reports directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Life and serves as a member of the Student Life Leadership Team, which sets the strategic direction for the cluster. The Director exercises leadership on campus-wide initiatives and may act on behalf of the AVC as requested.

Manages a discrete Student Affairs or Student Life & Development function and/or program. Formulates policies and procedures for the function. Develops the long and short-term organizational goals of the unit. Represents the program internally and externally. Manages the operating budget and human resources of the program.

QUALIFICATIONS

* Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization. Includes knowledge of theories and principles of higher education administration, undergraduate education, and student development, including the developmental benefits of student involvement in co-curricular activities to determine the best methods of providing students with experiential learning, communication, and leadership skills through involvement in student government, its services, and commissions.

* Thorough knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

* Knowledge, skills and experience in assessing the risk of student-initiated activities, programs, and travel and working effectively with students and campus departments to reduce the risk of activities to acceptable levels. Knowledge of risk-mitigating requirements and strategies related to working with minors.

* Knowledge, skills and experience in monitoring student organization activities, identifying controversial and/or sensitive activities, and working with campus officials to develop and implement a response plan.

* Experience in administering and setting the strategic direction of a student government office at a large public university. Knowledge of the resources necessary to support the various services, commissions, and functions carried our by the student government.

* Knowledge of University policies, processes, and procedures. Must have knowledge about how University policies are created and updated so that they can stay abreast of all related documents. Must possess a complex and thorough understanding of the relationship between the student government and key administrators within the organization

* Strong knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to support students through advising and counseling methods appropriate for students in high visibility and high demand leadership positions. Additionally, knowledge of advising and counseling techniques most impactful for traditional college age students.

* Strong skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements. Must have knowledge in current assessment methods used to measure Student Learning Outcomes and Program impact.

* Bachelor's Degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling or related field plus at least three to five (3 - 5) years of experience in student activities or equivalent experience required. Masters degree preferred.

* Demonstrated leadership and management experience in a complex organization with proven ability to apply management principles, lead staff, organize and set priorities, and establish unit goals and outcomes.

* Proven knowledge in the area of fiscal management including budget development, long-range planning, strategic and facility planning. Must possess the ability to forecast transitions and needs to keep the student government operating optimally.

* Strong skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.

* Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written skills including the ability to write grants and proposals, present before groups, advise students, and resolve conflicts.

* Knowledge, skills and experience in staffing practices, including goal setting, supervision, recruitment, hiring, training, motivation, and evaluation.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

* Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

* Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
