About the Opportunity

The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking applications for a Director of Research and Scholarship. This position is responsible for managing and supporting scholarly endeavors in the Department of Emergency Medicine, including, but not limited to, pre-award and post-award sponsored research processes, as well as resident and faculty derived research projects and protocols in the department. The Director will work directly with the chairperson and leadership team for the strategic alignment of the research operations with the departments overarching goals. Those developed strategies will be used to identify and development nationally recognized EM niche units.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight of the department's research programs and activities with a focus on the growth and sustainability of the department's research portfolio.
  • Strong leadership and management skills related to developing operational effectiveness, advising on research priorities, strategic planning, funding needs, IRB submission, and budgeting.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to all levels of faculty.
  • Support and expand student involvement in research at all levels in partnership.
  • Liaison between departmental leadership, research leaders at the School of Medicine to identify additional opportunities for multidisciplinary interactions.
  • Oversee the financial management of all grant funded projects, including the oversight of proposed budgets - including but not limited to current projects FOCUS, HRSA, Math VTE, and WV Opioid Response Grant.
  • Serve as the liaison to the office of sponsored programs for the seamless operation of all grants - including but not limited to current projects as noted above.

  • Work directly with the chairperson and leadership team for the strategic alignment of the research operations with the departments overarching goals.
  • Facilitate the management of grant funded projects, including direct management with WVU business offices.
  • Work directly with emerging niche research groups (i.e., rural medicine, telemedicine services, prehospital services, sports medicine, resident education, etc...) for the development of those groups to becoming nationally recognized niche units.
  • Work directly with Faculty with the identification, strategic planning, and securing funded projects.
  • Oversee, plan, direct, and coordinate organizational activities including policy formulation, management of daily operations, and resource stewardship consistent with Departmental and budgetary objectives.
  • Develop and manage critical relationships with faculty members, residents, and physicians at other WVU Medicine Emergency Medicine sites in order to further departmental research endeavors
  • Provide counsel to faculty, staff, residents, medical students, and research administrators within the Department, Health Sciences Center, and Health System related to sponsored and non-sponsored research.
  • Ensure the department meets research related compliance standards with external agency regulations, government regulations, and contract regulations, as well as compliance with internal policies and procedures.
  • Hire, supervise, and schedule Research Division staff
  •  Encourage, assist in the development of, and provide review and approval of research and grant proposals for faculty, residents, students, and physicians throughout the WVU Medicine Emergency Medicine enterprise.
  • Assist faculty, residents, and students in developing research questions, designing projects with the appropriate methodology, and navigating the IRB process for approval of projects.
  • Assist with basic statistical analyses, dependent on project needs.
  • Assist with the development of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, as well as coordinate pre- and post-submission author communication.
  •  Assist with the development and submission of presentation materials for local, regional, national and international presentations, including but not limited to the preparation of posters or oral presentation materials.
  • Develop collaborative relationships across Departments and Schools in the Health Sciences Center, as well as the health system in order to grow interdepartmental research endeavors.
  • Participate in Departmental research committees as directed by the Chairman to support faculty and resident research ideas and assist in navigating the all parts of the research process.
  • Work with the residency leadership team to monitor and compile faculty and resident research productivity with annual reports to the leadership in order to ensure compliance with accreditation standards regarding scholarly productivity.
  • Serve as the leader of the WVU Department of Emergency Medicine Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC)-to organize meetings with EM residents and assure project accountability and completion.
  • Serve as an active leader and participant in the WVU Emergency Medicine Residency Curriculum, serving as a mentor and educator on topics related to scholarly work-including, but not limited to, journal club mentorship, delivery of standard lectures as assigned in the curriculum, etc.
  • Seek out, identify, and disseminate research and scholarship opportunities/updates and funding opportunities
     


Qualifications

  • Master's degree is a related health field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Individuals who maintain a PhD or EdD in a related field are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Two (2) years experience:
    • Pre-award/grant management experience
    • Post-award grant management experience
    • Experience in higher education setting
    • Administrative/Management experience
  • Strong organizational, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced knowledge of research administration
  • Advanced knowledge of PC-based software and related applications, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant institutional, state, federal, and non-federal fiscal and administrative rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge in/use of WVU systems (KC)
  • Advanced knowledge in/use of federal application systems (grants.gov/workspace, NIH ASSIST, NSF Fastlane, etc.)
  • Demonstrated employee development and performance management skills
  • Ability to respond well under pressure and manage competing demands
  • Ability to gather and analyze information, identify problems, develop alternatives, use reason even when dealing with emotional topics
  • Ability to work well in interdisciplinary groups and resolve matters in a timely fashion
  • Must possess high level of integrity
