Position Summary

Responsible for the direction and leadership of operational, financial, programmatic and personnel activities for the Genetics Program. This includes establishing, meeting and continuously monitoring the goals and objectives while maintaining alignment with the strategic goals and objectives for GW MFA and the GW Cancer Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Continually assesses all services, identifies problems, utilizes data to analyze and propose innovative approaches for solutions. Oversees the development of procedures and policies that ensure optimal and efficient genetic counseling service delivery.
  • Develops and implements clinical outcome measures for quality improvement, cost and complication reduction, and the implementation of evidence-based medicine. Incorporates the use of evidence-based practice and appreciative inquiry into program development and improvement activities.
  • Prepares and delivers reports to operational leadership outlining progress toward meeting annual goals and objectives, to include performance related to finance, clinical activity, quality, safety, marketing, and human resources.
  • Manages the complex interdepartmental and interdisciplinary relationships to assure collaboration and effective/efficient operations within the Genetics Program and departments which this service is provided. Applies strategic thinking to identify industry leading programs, offerings, and genetic counseling services.
  • Conducts research related to genetic conditions or genetic counseling.
  • Proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets.
  • Determines strategies for a program with organization-wide impact.
  • Directs and is accountable for the clinical and operational functions of staff. Recommends allocation of staff, space, equipment, and other resources to optimize the delivery of clinical services. Oversees implementation of quality improvement plans. Ensures compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
  • Collaborates with senior management to develop, improve and integrate genetic counseling functions and systems across specialties and other referring entities. Applies strategic thinking to identify industry leading programs, offerings, and genetic counseling and prevention services.
  • Develops processes and analytics to assure viability of existing programs and practice patterns, and optimize productivity. Reviews and approves proposals for operational performance improvement projects that impact marketability and service.

Other Related Duties

  • Involves the determination of risk factors for hereditary diseases and disorders in patients.
  • Leads program development and quality improvement activities, including new models of care.
  • Exhibits awareness of personal attitudes and beliefs, recognizing its effect on response to others.
  • Ensures integration of ethical standards and core values into everyday work activities.
  • Creates and maintains a satisfying workplace that fosters professional growth and job satisfaction for all members to the healthcare team.
  • Identifies lack of competency in performance and establishes a plan which includes goals, interventions, and measures.
  • Pursues professional development and facilitates access for subordinate staff to ongoing training, development, and educational opportunities in all relevant specialties and categories of care.
  • Ensures through subordinate supervisors that all relevant licenses and certifications are current and properly documented.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master's Degree in Clinical Genetic Counseling

Licensure

  • Applicable Genetic Counseling License; Board certified by American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics

Experience

  • Prior experience in the management of genetic services and/or programs.
  • Broad knowledge of modern health care administration practices and principles within a managed care environment and/or an academic medical center.
  • Ability to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction including employees, patients, visitors, faculty, referring physicians and external stakeholders.
