The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) is the central coordinating and support organization for a highly regarded cluster of seven independent colleges known as The Claremont Colleges. TCCS with a staff of 300, provides exceptional shared services to 9,000 students, and almost 3,600 faculty and staff. TCCS staff work in both student-facing services as well as administrative and operational services. Our numerous departments are located throughout The Claremont Colleges campus in the beautiful city of Claremont, California.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) seeks an experienced, knowledgeable, and dynamic educator for the position of Director for the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). This is a unique and distinguished opportunity to lead a collaborative, multi-institution Center to support a diverse faculty in their pursuit of teaching excellence to promote the intellectual and personal growth of all students at The Claremont Colleges. The Claremont Colleges form a consortium of seven separate institutions Claremont Graduate University, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Keck Graduate Institute, Pitzer College, Pomona College, and Scripps College.

The Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will provide leadership and strategic guidance for the Center, promoting a faculty culture of life-long learning and commitment to effective teaching. The Director, along with center staff, will support faculty as they learn about, implement and advance evidence-based teaching and learning practices and technologies in every stage of their careers. The Director is supported by a full time Assistant Director, and two part-time faculty Co-Directors. The Director will help build institutional capacity around learning and executing strategies to enhance learner-centered teaching across the consortium. Specific duties include:

Leadership and Operations

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the operations, resources, and staff of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).
  • Initiate outreach and maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with faculty across The Claremont Colleges consortium and learn about their teaching and learning needs and goals.
  • Stay current on inclusive pedagogy, educational technology, and high-impact teaching
  • Proactively collaborate with faculty, CTL staff, and other stakeholders to develop and implement impactful programming, resources, services, and events offered by CTL.
  • Institute new initiatives for programming, services, and communications that integrate the CTL with other consortium educational programs and other aspects of teaching and learning that engage all faculty of The Claremont Colleges.
  • Design instructional resources and identify effective outlets and strategies for connecting faculty to resources and education research.
  • Design and lead workshops, seminars, and work groups for faculty.
  • Conduct assessment on the impact of CTL programs, services, and resources and complete follow-through to revise and create new plans and programs accordingly. Develop and routinely report metrics that inform Center effectiveness to internal and external audiences, as appropriate.
  • Identify and cultivate connections with experts, scholars, and other higher education leaders to solicit for speaking and presentation activities.
  • Establish and maintain relevant industry contacts at the local, regional, and national
  • Provide responsible management of the Centers fiscal resources and other assets.
  • Provide development and support for Center staff as needed including development opportunities, goal setting, and regular feedback on progress and performance.


Faculty Support
  • Meet with faculty individually and in groups as appropriate to support their teaching and learning needs and goals. Facilitate connections with experts and resources as needed.
  • Design and oversee consultation, classroom observation, and formative assessment support services for faculty.
  • Coordinate programming and activities with office engaged with teaching and learning at The Claremont Colleges, including Claremont Graduate University's Director of Teaching and Learning and Preparing Future Faculty.


Consortial Collaboration
  • Collaborate with leadership across TCC on curricular design projects and implement new instructional strategies or educational technology.
  • Identify and communicate information on relevant grants and fellowships.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with diverse individuals at all levels across the consortium.

COMPENSATION

Pay: The monthly salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required for the position.

ABOUT YOU

Education: You have a master's degree, or ideally a terminal degree, in Education, Higher Education Administration, or another related field. In addition, must have knowledge of current research, trends and thinking concerning diversity and inclusion, particularly in higher-education settings.

Experience: You have five to seven (5-7) years of experience working in educational development, preferably at a four-year liberal arts institution. Your experience must include:
  • Promoting active learning and learner-centered environments;
  • Collaborating effectively with various and diverse stakeholders, including administrators, academic units, faculty, students, and staff; and
  • Working with diverse initiatives and managing programs.


In addition, you have:
  • Knowledge of current research, trends and thinking concerning diversity and inclusion, particularly in higher-education settings. Integrity, respect, and an appreciation for confidentiality.
  • The ability to promote active learning and learner-centered environments.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with various and diverse stakeholders, including administrators, academic units, faculty, students, and staff.
  • The ability to work with diversity initiatives and manage multiple programs.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving and excellent judgment for decision-making.
  • A high-level of organization skills and the ability to initiate, manage, and complete multiple projects on time.
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain a collaborative environment with a population of diverse individuals.
  • A service-oriented approach to individuals at all levels and across all disciplines and institutions.
  • The ability to deal with others and with confidential information in a manner that exhibits patience, diplomacy, and discretion.
  • Skill in accepting feedback and adjusting to meet a wide range of client needs.
  • The ability to plan, organize and direct the work of professional staff.
  • Performance management skills and effective methods to coach and develop direct reports.
