Position Overview: The Director, Business Development (BD) - International will lead resource development from public and private sector donors for CWS’ international portfolio in Africa, Asia, Europe & Middle East, and Latin American & the Caribbean. Under the supervision of the Vice President, Business Development and adherent to the BD Strategy and organizational goals, the Director, BD leads thestrategic direction for funding priorities and targets, proposal development, submissions, competitive analysis and positioning. The position isa member of the BD Unit senior management team, oversees a team that will potentially scale with growth (initially an Associate Director and a Manager), and is a primary point of contact for external and internal stakeholders for CWS’ International BD portfolio.

Essential Duties:

  • In alignment with the CWS Business Development Strategy and under the supervision of the VP, BD, oversee resource acquisition for the international portfolio to achieve regional and organizational BD Key Performance Indicators and funding diversification and sustainability goals.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of regional and program area business development plans, engaging internal stakeholders (programs, finance, operations, communications, HR, etc.) and leading periodic portfolio performance reviews.
  • Oversee research and development projects for competitive analysis and new funding markets for the international portfolio.
  • Effectively and creatively direct and participate in positioning by engaging target donors, partners, and influencers and representing CWS with high degree of professionalism and integrity to identify and secure funding streams. This role will collaborate with others in the organization including the BD Engagement team, Technical Unit, Programs staff, Executive staff, and Communications teams in these efforts.
  • Use data to inform decisionmaking by overseeing regional pipeline data collection and reporting, and leading Go/No-Go decisionmaking processes for the portfolio, ensuring bid assessments including key risk and compliance factors are considered.
  • Working with the Finance - Budget & Forecasting staff, provide expert input on portfolio status, risk assessments, and cost application guidance.
  • Supervise the full BD process lifecycle within the team and with key internal and external stakeholders, applying industry standard approaches and tools, and overseeing quality control.
  • Provide bid leadership and review for BD opportunities, as volume of opportunities in portfolio requires; ensure technical and cost applications are complete and of high quality.
  • Oversee consortia and sub-partner development and agreements in pre-award processes.
  • Lead successful negotiations with funders, partners and other stakeholders on BD opportunities and submissions to advance resource acquisition, programmatic and operational goals.
  • Contribute to the continued development of BD data strategies and processes and ensure they are applied by the team, including using data to track BD performance and enhance BD processes.
  • Collaborating with the VP, the BD team and other relevant staff – including individual philanthropy, marketing and resource mobilization - advancethe continued enhancement of resource development strategy, approaches, processes and tools across the organization to support the diversification and sustainability goals.Contribute to building a ‘BD culture’ across the organization and create capacity building strategies and activities.
  • As advised by the VP, BD, participate in organizational initiatives created to advance strategic and operational goals.
  • Manage a team of BD staff through motivational leadership, high quality professional standards and staff development, an inclusive management approach, and a focus on staff wellbeing and engagement.
  • Ensure that CWS and team values are reflected in the BD unit’s work; model the DEI goals of the organization within the BD team and with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Other Duties as assigned as directed by supervisor.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Minimum ten years’ experience in business development for large, complex humanitarian aid and international development organizations, with a particular emphasis on refugees and displaced populations, and with public and private sector institutional donors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with donor compliance requirements, including USG (2CFR200,2CFR75); UN; UK; and EU donors.
  • Effective and inspirational management skills, with a diverse team operating under high pressure and tight deadlines, applying a demonstrated inclusive management approach and talent development strategies.
  • Highly effective project management skills, including logistical and change management approaches for complex projects using systems thinking.
  • High competence with Salesforce or similar system for grants management.
  • Demonstrated capability in working with data sets, systems, and analysis.
  • Strong English communication skills, both written and oral. High capacity to influence and negotiate.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural/multi-national environment required.
  • Ability to bring lightness to serious work preferred; calmness and empathy during crises is a must.
