Job Description
The Development Officer Individual Giving, reports to the Senior Director of Individual Giving and manages a portfolio of 250 prospects with a capacity rating of $250,000-$500,000. A key responsibility is identifying, qualifying, and cultivating prospects to grow our prospect pool and donor pipeline. In addition, the Development Officer is responsible for developing personalized strategies for engagement and solicitation that maximize each individual's philanthropic capacity and support for the College's funding priorities. This includes collaborating across the department and the College to formulate solicitation plans.

A successful candidate will help grow overall fundraising at Wellesley College through teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving to build the pipeline in anticipation of a capital campaign. The Development Officer will also hold a portfolio of leadership annual giving donors and prospective donors they will cultivate and solicit support for Wellesley College.

This is an ideal role in which to learn and refine the important foundational skills necessary in becoming a Leadership Gifts officer.

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Identifies, qualifies, cultivates, and solicits Wellesley alumnae, parents, and friends with the capacity to make gifts of $250,000+ over 5 years in support of the College's priorities.
  • Actively manages a portfolio of approximately 250 prospects, employing appropriate strategies and tactics in prospect and portfolio management.
  • Travels as appropriate to assigned regions to meet with prospects and donors.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in Leadership and Principal Giving, Gift Planning, and The Wellesley Fund to meet individual and shared programmatic and dollar goals.
  • Presents articulately, persuasively, and with confidence the critical role that The Wellesley Fund plays in the life of the College and 2-3 select restricted funding opportunities identified by the Vice President for Development.
  • Meets or exceeds annual qualification, moves management, and fundraising goals.
  • Represents the LG/PG team at events to support Wellesley and cultivate donors at which alumnae, parents, and friends are present, such as Durant receptions, both on campus and in major markets like New York, Chicago, San Francisco; Family & Friends Weekend; Commencement; and Reunion. Represents the LG/PG team at events to support Wellesley and cultivate donors.
  • Support stewardship and cultivation of donors through personalized outreach.
  • Contribute user experience input to guide Operations-construction of systems and processes to qualify, engage and cultivate a large base of donors and prospective donors.
  • Using technical and analytical skills, evaluate data and prospect research, and schedule in-person and virtual prospect meetings through phone and digital channels.
  • Travel to identify and cultivate existing and new relationships with parents and prospects
  • capable of making gifts annually of $22,500 or more.
  • Track and analyze short- and long-term trends in data to inform strategic decisions.
  • Fully and timely document prospect strategies, contact reports, gift solicitations, and stewardship reports within donor database.
  • Carries out other projects and duties as required.
Performance Profile:
  • The Development Officer is responsible for building relationships with highly rated prospects and donors and securing gifts of six figures or more in support of the College's top priorities. The Development Officer collaborates with Development colleagues, faculty, College administration, and volunteer leaders to identify and engage top prospects and donors.
  • The Development, Individual Giving, facilitates and coordinates all communication with assigned prospects and among prospects' College relationships, and develops and promotes compelling engagement and relationships with assigned prospects to maximize their financial support of the College's fundraising priorities.
Education/Skills Required:
  • Bachelor's degree and valid driver's license
  • Must be motivated by developing partnerships and achieving success as a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and solicit 6-figure donations from individuals.
Experience Required:
  • 2-4 years of front-line fundraising, or comparable experience, including conducting solicitations and closing gifts, as well as having familiarity with reunion giving or alumni/ae development experience, preferably in an academic setting
  • Experience developing, soliciting, and stewarding prospects rated $100,000 or more and donors making gifts of 5 figures or more
  • Experience working with a wide spectrum of volunteers and donors in an outward facing capacity
  • Proposal writing
Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Demonstrated thoughtful and collaborative project management skills
  • Highly organized and able to complete complex tasks and multiple projects simultaneously, working both independently and as a member of a team
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, appropriate for engaging high-level prospects and members of the campus community
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, comfort with ambiguity, and ability to pivot
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively, customer service focus
  • Familiarity with or interest in learning about planned giving and events
  • Ability and desire to travel an average of 5-7 days per month to meet with prospects
  • Absolute confidentiality, professionalism, and discretion required
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of Wellesley College
  • High comfort level using technology to communicate and share information, as well as experience with a prospect database
Other:
  • This is an exempt, full-time position reporting to the Senior Director of Individual Giving. Some night and weekend work is required, as is regular travel outside Massachusetts.
