The Role
Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.
This position is for a senior level designer in A1B Propulsion Plant Planning Yard's (PPPY) Structure, Shielding, and Hull Outfitting (SSHO) department (formally E72). This position will support the department's activities associated with CVN 78 Class aircraft carrier ship design and construction, as well as commissioned CVN 78 Class ship maintenance, overhaul, and modernization. The successful candidate should have experience with research, design, project management, and overall general problem solving related to building and maintaining naval nuclear reactor plants. An extensive knowledge of shipyard waterfront operations is desirable. The applicant should also have a proven history of resolving complex problems with limited supervision while successfully communicating with all levels of management and external customers. A demonstrated ability to train and mentor others is also required.
This position will involve taking a leading design role and work with SME's in various areas of department E70's SSHO group, but specifically focusing on Paint, Cathodic Protection, and Hull Outfitting commodities. The successful candidate for this position will be knowledgeable and have extensive experience in the following areas: structural design, foundation design, ship configuration management, hull outfitting design, surface preparation/coatings, and or Ship Alteration (ShipALT) development. Major duties will include providing oversight, checking, technical writing, and schedule management of the development of new construction and commissioned ship fabrication and modification documentation (Technical Authority (TA) model files/drawings), resolving emergent high priority issues (either individually or as leader for a team effort), and serving as a mentor for younger less experienced designers in the group.
