Role Summary

The legal services industry has been impacted by various forms of innovation over recent years. This innovation has four constituent components: "People, Process, Tech and Data Analytics." New skill sets (People) are required to work within reengineered workflows (Process) using new technologies (Legal technology and new collaboration tools) and leveraging new approaches to harness and leverage information (Legal Data Analytics).

Driven by increased client demand, the move towards "Data Driven Counsel" and a new competitive landscape, there has been an acceleration of the adoption of Legal Analytics solutions across the legal services industry. Consequently, legal data analytics technology is now positioned to change both what legal services are provided to clients and how those services are provided and consumed.

The Data Analytics team at Shearman & Sterling was established to leverage data to optimize how the firm operates and facilitate the move towards providing data driven counsel to its clients. The Data Engineer role is integral to building out a data analytics landscape based on data lake and data warehouse architectures. This role will create new data pipelines to populate our enterprise data lake that feeds our subject area data marts to enable our data consumers to make data driven counsel a reality. This individual will also provide best practices on secure foundational cloud data platform implementations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze systems data integrations, support systems, replacements and design new data integrations.
  • Propose and develop data solutions to enable effective decision-making, driving business objects or addressing the enterprise integration requirements.
  • Create logical and physical data models based on Data Governance principals such as data ownership and security.
  • Build data ingestion pipelines using ADF to extract data from various sources and load into Azure Data Lake.
  • Analyze the data quality, align technical design to data governance, address all the required non-business but operational requirements during the design and build of data pipelines.
  • Provide Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing solutions and support by leveraging project standards and leading analytic platform.
  • Design, develop and maintain internally developed Data Hub and all integrations.
  • Apply industry best practices to assist IT teams with respect to data migration and integrations and solution design.
  • Work as part of the Data Services team to define, document and implement Enterprise Data Reference data and standards.
  • Perform data analysis, execute data clean up when required, as per the established standards.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
  • Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL), as well as experience with complex Stored Procedures for data processing.
  • Experience building and optimizing data pipelines, architectures and datasets.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Knowledge of data modelling.
  • Experience with industry leading cloud-based IT and data technologies and end user tools demonstrating expertise with Microsoft Azure and Power BI.
  • Exceptional data analysis and data profiling skills.
  • Good understanding of Azure and BLOB Storage.
  • Experience working on Data bricks, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse and other Azure data solutions ecosystems.
  • Ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies as they become prevalent and widely implemented.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field, including mathematics, computer science, physics, economics, engineering, statistics, operations research or quantitative social science.
  • 5+ years data management and/or ETL development.
  • 5+ years of experience working in a senior developer role with very close alignment to Data Strategy initiatives and driving business value through the delivery of application and data technology.
  • Legal industry experience a plus but not required.

Physical Activity/Other Miscellaneous
  • Ability to work outside standard business hours as needed.
