About the Department:

The Women and LGBT Center empowers students to increase awareness and understanding of gender equity issues. The center gives voice for women and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, with purpose to eliminate barriers, diminish prejudices, and create a supportive climate and space for all. We reach out to the SMU community to create dialogue around gender issues and LGBT initiatives. Through our student organizations, you have the opportunity to make a mark on this campus. About the Position:

Under the supervision of the Director, the Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation
of student programs and events and trainings that assess and address the needs of students related to gender and sexuality. This position is charged with working with the Director in developing and delivering educational workshops, student leadership programs, presentations, and educational resources for the university community. The Coordinator has a strong focus on outreach activities on behalf of the center. This position also assists the Director with daily center space operations, student staff supervision, programming, budget, assessment, strategic planning, and reporting.

Essential Functions:

  • Works with the director to oversee LGBTQ+ trainings and workshops, such as Ally Training and other educational activities. Reviews and updates education/training content. Oversees the assessment and tracking of outcomes for educational programs and assists the director in development and facilitation of community education and trainings such as Elect Her and Salary Negotiation Workshops.
  • Develops, implements, and assesses programs and services for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, questioning, and non-binary students. Oversees signature LGBTQ+ programming such as LGBT History Month, LGBTQ Symposium, and LGBTQ Mentorship Program. Assists the Director with other programming efforts such as the Women's Symposium, Emmie V. Baine Lecture Series, and other various events.
  • Provides advising for clubs, organizations, and major student groups as appropriate such as Spectrum, Lavender Leaders, and others as necessary. Oversees the development and execution of discussion groups based on relevant and requested topics
  • Assists the director in providing information, advocacy, and referral for LGBTQ+ students. Assists the director in supporting student success and student retention including outreach to LGBTQ+ students.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with university departments, other programs, offices, student organizations and community constituents. Participates on Student Affairs, University, and/or community committees, coalitions, task forces, and/or search committees. Seeks opportunities to develop working relationships with community and industry partners in order to provide referral resources and development opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Assists with assessment efforts of the division and within the unit; including basic tracking of activities, program evaluation, and measurement of learning outcomes. Incorporates assessment data and best practices for learning outcomes, outcome measures, and evaluation procedures. Coordinates communication outreach through website, social media, and student databases and is responsible for social media upkeep and outreach.
  • Supervises Student Workers, Interns and Volunteers. Develops and assesses training and leadership development opportunities for student staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Occasional evening/weekend hours will be required


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree is preferred. A Bachelor's degree in Student Affairs administration, Higher Education, Gender studies or a related field is preferred.

A minimum of two years of experience is required.

Experience developing and implementing programming, workshops and presentations is required. Demonstrated experience in public speaking and group facilitation is essential. Experience advising and supporting students is highly preferred. Experience in social media management is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated knowledge regarding the concerns and issues of LGBTQIA+ students, as well as women is essential.

Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people of diverse ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, religions, abilities, including students, faculty, staff and the surrounding communities.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
