Newport News YouthBuild, new workforce development program for young adults who live in Newport News community. This program can be a game-changer for our local young adult residents who live within income challenged areas and are striving to overcome barriers to their long-term success. YouthBuild's hope is the community take advantage, get the word out and share the information with residents.

VOACC is seeking part-time craft instructors in the Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry and HVAC trades to provide instruction, support, assessment, and mentorship to students in our Newport News YouthBuild program. Emphasis is on facilitating students learning through working with students in classrooms, workshops, on field sites, and through distance learning.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • At least three years experience working in HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, and Carpentry fields.
  • Teaching or training experience, preferably in a workplace, education or similar setting.
  • EPA-608 Universal certified for HVAC instruction.
  • NCCER certified or able to become certified within 3 months of hire.

Specialized Knowledge Of:
  • Basic principles of construction and building construction technology.
  • Carpentry.
  • Electrical principles
  • Plumbing.
  • Residential HVAC systems and applications.
  • Green applications for residential construction.

Skills:
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.

Demonstrated Ability To:
  • Apply construction trades theories to practical applications.
  • Assess learner performance and progress and provide supportive feedback.
  • Measure, assess and align learner performance with required certification.
  • Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student competence.
  • Manage up to 15 students that includes in-person instruction, workshops on- and off-site.
  • Maintain complete and accurate student performance records.
  • Adapt to industry requirements and trends, locally and nationally.
  • Use Email (Outlook), Microsoft Word, and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certifications where appropriate.
  • Journeyman or Master Technician in one or more construction trades.
  • Experience designing and developing instruction modules in-person and virtually.
