Clinical Skills Coordinator - RN
We are seeking a Clinical Nurse (Clinical Skills Coordinator - RN (CSC-RN)) who is to organize the teaching and assessment program for the internal medicine residency programs at JHH and JHBMC. This will involve three core components:

  • Developing and delivering orientation programs on bedside skill (including point of care technology)
  • Developing a robust clinical skills assessment program that incorporates real patients as well as
  • Designing and administering a formative clinical skills activity called the Assessment of Physical Examination and Communication Skills (APECS).


The CSC-RN will also help to develop innovative clinical assessment tools and participate in ongoing research on the impact of bedside educational programs on resident attitudes, confidence, skills, and behaviors, as well as patient care outcomes.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • In coordination with the residency program, the CSC-RN will organize and track trainee participation in orientation programs relevant to bedside skill and the use of point of care technology each year.
  • The CSC-RN will organize a panel of patients with physical exam findings to take part in APECS, a formative assessment of internal medicine trainees. This will involve communicating with SOM faculty and the surrounding community to identify potential candidate patients, contacting patients to recruit them to the program, and retaining patients once they join.
  • The CSC-RN will develop and organize a collection of standardized patient (SP) encounters that can be used in the APECS assessment program. The CSC-RN will work with the Simulation Center to train SPs to participate in APECS.
  • The CSC-RN will help to recruit SOM faculty to participate as preceptors for the APECS program.
  • The CSC-RN will work with the Simulation Center, the internal medicine residency programs, and other relevant entities to organize recurring APECS assessment sessions. The sessions are 3-4 hours and will be repeated twice on a given day. It is anticipated that there will be 8-12 sessions per year, but the numbers may grow based on program success. The CSC-RN will be responsible for scheduling patients, SPs and faculty preceptors as well as housestaff to participate in assessment sessions. The CSC-RN will be the chief exam administrator on APECS assessment days.
  • The CSC-RN will help to develop CME programs designed to improve the bedside skills and teaching of faculty.
  • The CSC-RN will attend internal medicine residency program meetings as needed with the Clinical Skills Program Director.
  • Assist the Residency Program at JHH in small projects as time allows.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Nursing Degree, and registered nurse in the State of Maryland.
  • Minimum of three years of clinical experience strongly preferred.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in direct patient care for purposes of patient assessment and suitability for learners.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to maintain professional interactions at all times with patients and staff.
  • Conveys respect for patient confidentiality.
  • Good organization skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with patients, faculty, learners and staff.
  • Good writing skills.
  • Computer skills in word processing, data base management, and e-mail for communication with faculty, data tracking and record keeping are essential.
  • Problem-solving/ conflict resolution skills with staff and learners.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
