Join our team of competent and compassionate professionals as a Classroom Support Counselor Family Partner in the Springfield Public Schools partnership at Behavioral Health Network! Classroom Support Counselor Family Partners provide social, behavioral, and academic support grounded in basic trauma-sensitive principles to students and their caregivers.

Learn, grow, accomplish develop skills utilizing best practices to provide support for students and their caregivers to help them improve academically and socially at an elementary school. Attend trainings on de-escalation strategies, trauma sensitive approaches, and will outreach to families.

Program: An elementary school multidisciplinary team working with students, school staff and caregivers, under the Massachusetts Association for Mental Health Facilitating Student Access to Pediatric Behavioral Health Urgent Care grant.

Part of a collaborating team utilizing best practices, providing sound and culturally sensitive consultation to school staff with the aim to support students' psychosocial skill-building with awareness and professionalism.

Additionally, Classroom Support Counselor Family Partners provide telephone and in-home support and consultation to caregivers when needed. They will provide their knowledge of community resources and connecting families to these resources. They participate in BHN and school-required trainings, as well as weekly team meetings at the school and supervision through BHN.

  • Responsibilities: What you will do
    • Work effectively as a Multidisciplinary Team member within an elementary school
    • Demonstrate problem solving ability in normal and changing conditions
    • Demonstrate a strength-based relationship with a parent/caregiver by improving the capacity of the parent /caregiver to parent the youth so as to improve the youth's functioning.
    • Engage parents/caregivers in activities that are designed to address one or more goals on the youth's treatment plan
    • Demonstrate ability to teach parents/caregivers how to navigate the child-serving systems and processes.
    • Demonstrate ability to foster empowerment and link parents/caregivers to peer/parent support and self-help groups.
    • Demonstrate ability to teach parents/caregivers how to identify formal and community-based resources.
    • Demonstrate competence in dealing with families from a variety of different cultural backgrounds.

Qualifications/Requirements

Classroom Support Counselor Family Partners at BHN have the following qualities:
    • Basic knowledge of child development and behavior management, particularly in a school setting (required).
    • Experience as a caregiver of a youth with special needs and preferably a youth with mental health needs (preferred).
    • Previous experience working with children with challenging Social/Emotional/Behavioral concerns (preferred).
    • Demonstrated willingness and ability to treat challenging and diverse client populations (required).
    • Bilingual in Spanish and English (required).
    • Valid Massachusetts driver's license and automobile (required).
    • Basic computer skills, including email and the internet (required).
    • Bachelor's degree and one (1) year experience working with target population; or Associate's degree, High School Diploma, HiSET®, or GED ® and two (2) years' experience working with target population.
