Position Summary

The Department of Family Medicine in the College of Human Medicine (CHM) at Michigan State University is seeking a chair to provide strategic and academic leadership. CHM was founded in 1964 with the mission to "serve the people" by educating physicians for the state of Michigan with a focus on primary care. CHM has come of age, earning a national reputation for its history of advancement and innovation in medical education and developing a research-intensive portfolio ranging from translational and computational science to public health and health disparities research.

CHM has built a robust network of clinical partners throughout the State of Michigan in order to provide students with comprehensive training in clinical settings that parallel the environment in which most physicians practice. The college now admits 190 students per year with a focus on mission and ranks among the nation's top 10% in terms of the diversity of its student body. The college has been successful in recruiting a student body from diverse gender, ethnic, racial and socio-economic backgrounds. The chair will be expected to embrace the strong culture of diversity and inclusion through recruitment and retention of faculty who create a welcoming environment for all students and who help address the challenges of society.

The Department of Family Medicine, founded in 1974, functions as a state-wide collaborative department with a mission to train physicians who will provide high quality, compassionate and cost-effective primary care; deliver patient care in settings characterized by excellence and innovation; conduct community-engaged research; advance knowledge in primary care and medical education; and advocate for the ideals of family medicine to students, residents and the community. Over the past 5 years, an average of 15% of our CHM graduates match in family medicine. The statewide model provides the opportunity for student clinical experiences to occur in outpatient and inpatient settings that serve many of Michigan's most vulnerable populations.

The department has 21 employed faculty and more than 800 affiliated clinical faculty including more than 100 affiliated residency faculty in 10 programs statewide. The department's research portfolio has grown with $2.6M received in extramural research support in the last five years, in areas such as pediatric behavioral health, health effects of cannabinoids, and prevention of substance use disorders in rural populations.

Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Chair will:

  • have oversight responsibility for the department's teaching, research and clinical activities
  • lead the department's faculty and staff in developing a clear direction for the future with a key commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • expand and revitalize the department's clinical activities
  • practice in the MSU clinical practice
  • strengthen the department's external clinical relationships
  • sustain and enhance educational excellence
  • continue the recent upward trajectory in research productivity
  • ensure effective management of all department resources including financial, personnel and space
  • mentor faculty to achieve academic advancement
  • serve as an effective external advocate and representative of the department and the College, working to raise the profile of Family Medicine, and engaging philanthropic donors.
