Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

The Registered Neurodiagnostic Technologist performs under general direction and according to established guidelines and procedures complex inpatient and outpatient neurodiagnostic procedures in all of the following modalities: Electroencenphalogram (EEG), Long-Term Memory (LTM), Epilepsy Monitoring (EMU), Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), and Transcranial Doppler (TCD).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure that all accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome. Operate Nihon Kohden, Cadwell, and Spencer Technologies equipment and document pertinent medical history from the patient or family members. Must be thoroughly familiar with and capable of performing accurate, technically acceptable variety of testing directly related to EEG, LTM, EMU phase I set ups, turning Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) on/off. Responsible for performing nerve conduction studies (NCS) under indirect supervision of a physician Assist neurologist with the performance of EMG studies Ability to recognize and eliminate electrical interference Submits reports and data into the EMR and referring physicians Perform quality outpatient and inpatient TCD studies including: vasospasm 21-day series, stenosis, dynamic, emboli, cerebral circulatory arrest, PFO Triages long term ICU EMU patients per established protocols. Calibrate and adjust the EEG, EMG, TCD apparatus in accordance with standard procedures. Prepare patient for tests to include obtaining preliminary patient history, measuring and marking cranial area and fastening electrodes to specified positions on scalp and body using various techniques applicable to individual procedure and patients' individual needs Identifies EEG patterns during testing and communicates to medical personnel. Recognize artifacts, and take appropriate steps to eliminate them. Cleans and completes routine maintenance on all neurodiagnostic equipment to ensure proper functioning. Responsible for reviewing, editing, pruning and archiving of all EEG recordings. Assist with supervisory duties in the absence of a Supervisor such as designating work assignments, overseeing junior staff and ensuring quality work production. Detect instrument malfunction and notifies manager of problems Participate in a call rotation for after department hours till 7 AM and weekend coverage for emergent Neurodiagnostic services including LTM and EMU. Participate in department meetings, in-service and lecture programs as they relate to Neurophysiology services. Maintain a daily volume log of all patients and various procedures Assist in facilitating the completion of EEG quality assessment and improvement activities for areas of responsibility and compiles necessary data. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Graduate from a Commission on Accreditation Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredited ENDT program

Experience:

  • Three or more years of experience performing various neuroscience tests including: EEG, LTM, EMU, EMG/NCS, and TCD testing
Licensure:
  • Current BLS certification
  • R.EEG.T with the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (ABRET) required
  • R.NCS.T with the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AAET) preferred
