The Health & Counseling Center (HCC) is a fully integrated, on-campus, accredited college health center that provides a wide range of medical and mental health services. who possesses cultural humility and a strong understanding of systems of oppression and can integrate those perspective into all their work. This position works in the CAPE unit at the HCC.

The mission of the HCC is to enhance overall student well-being and success through inclusive physical and mental healthcare, prevention, education, advocacy, and recovery support services. Most shifts are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with occasional shifts from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Physicians, nurses, psychologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health professionals staff the HCC. All students enrolled for academic credit (full-time or part-time, undergraduate, or graduate) may use the HCC.

Position Summary

The Center for Advocacy, Prevention, and Empowerment Advocate serves as the primary advocate providing advocacy, support and case management services to any member of the DU community who is been impacted by sexual assault, harassment, stalking, relationship violence and/or other interpersonal violence. This position will also assist with training various constituencies on campus (professional staff, student staff, etc.), as well as work in collaboration with Health Promotion and Counseling Services to enhance current initiatives and develop new initiatives that increase awareness of and response to sexual assault and interpersonal violence situations. This position is responsible for embedding inclusive excellence (diversity) initiatives into treatment provision, advocacy work, and outreach initiatives. The CAPE Advocate reports to the Director of Advocacy Services. This is a 12-month, (1.0 FTE benefitted) position.

Essential Functions

Direct Victim Advocacy
  • Provide trauma-informed advocacy, support, case management and consultation to survivors on the DU campus including those impacted by sexual assault, relationship violence, harassment, and/or stalking.
  • Build and expand knowledge-base of the disproportionate impact on marginalized or diversely identified survivors.
  • Develop and maintain University systems to support survivors of interpersonal violence and work with campus partners in a collaborative manner.
  • Create and maintain ongoing relationships with community based victim advocacy groups, committees and cohorts.
  • Maintain awareness of current Title IX policies and regulations.
  • Maintain an awareness of current police and legal procedures relating to gender violence response and prosecution in the city and county of Denver.
  • In collaboration with Campus Safety and CAPE Director, maintain a comprehensive data system to provide Clery reportable data and to provide University stakeholders with information on sexual assault and interpersonal violence incidents without violating Confidentiality laws.
  • Maintain confidential records that reflect the advocacy work in a timely manner.
  • Keep apprised of current research related to sexual assault, gender-based constructs, and interpersonal violence.
  • Support efforts around program development and data collection in order to identify and implement CAPE programmatic improvements to best serve survivors at DU.
Education and Training
  • Collaborate with campus partners to lead the coordination and planning of campus wide events such as those for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Stalking Awareness Month.
  • Maintain adequate documentation that highlights the efforts in education and prevention.
    Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Completion of 40-hour advocacy training in the state of Colorado which provides legal confidentiality for this role (or to be completed within an agreed upon timeframe after hiring).
  • Experience with case management, intervention and/or providing advocacy services.
  • Robust understanding of topics related to gender socialization, violence prevention, and service for underrepresented populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of Inclusive Excellence.
  • Strong listening, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, women & gender studies or another health-related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience serving victims/survivors with multiple barriers and from diverse populations.
  • One year experience in interpersonal violence and sexual assault prevention and response services.
  • Master's degree or higher in social work, counseling, psychology, women & gender studies or related fields.
  • Experience working in interpersonal violence or health services in higher education.
  • Experiencing managing or supervising interns, employees or volunteers.
Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule

This position requires employees to work onsite 8:00am-5:00pm with some weekends, evenings and holidays.

Salary Grade Number

The salary grade for the position is 9.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $60,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
