Mueller Water Products (NYSE: MWA), the nation's leading manufacturer of flow control devices for the water and gas distribution industries, has an opening in our Decatur, Illinois manufacturing plant for a Casting Simulation Engineer.

Established in 1857, the Decatur facilities employ approximately 550 employees to manufacturer rugged and dependable devices used in industrial/commercial applications. Operating one of the largest domestic green sand copper-alloy foundries, the Decatur team supports Mueller facilities across the US with castings for municipal waterworks product including service brass valves and fittings, tapping machines, gate valves and fire hydrants in addition to components for the Mueller Gas product lines.

The Casting Simulation Engineer will work with a team of subject matter experts and utilize casting simulation to develop gating and feeding designs for various castings. This position will drive yield improvements for the foundry while maintaining casting quality and implementing design-for-manufacturing principles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Performs pre and post analysis of solid models in casting simulation environment.

  • Develops gating and riser and/or chills required to produce superior quality castings.

  • Works closely with metallurgist and tooling engineering to provide technical problem solving for the foundry.

  • Performs CAD modeling and provides the rigging geometry for tooling engineering.

  • Responsible for quality conscious design including cost, weight, reliability and ease of manufacturing.

  • Ability to reverse engineer existing tooling with 3D scanning equipment and recommend rigging changes to improve casting performance of existing tooling designs.

  • Understanding the company's products and optimize the casting design.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and work as a team as part of a larger project.

  • Apply knowledge and experience with GD&T practices for component design and specification.

  • Utilize Microsoft Excel for calculations and other Microsoft office tools for communication and presentation.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Company's manufacturing operations, to understand the strengths and weaknesses of design concepts from the point of view of manufacturability within the Company.


Required Experience and/or Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar technical degree

  • 3-D CAD education and/or experience

  • One or more (1+) years' experience in the engineering field.

  • Experience with solid modeling, scanning software and FEA analysis is a plus.

  • 3D CAD experience using Creo or Solidworks.
