GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Performs blood, urine and body fluid tests on humans with speed, method, precision and understanding of theory behind tests; studies morphology of constituents of blood to obtain data for use in diagnoses and treatment of disease.

Day, evening and overnight shifts available. Please note this position is temporary in nature and not eligible for benefits.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Gains experience and develops working knowledge by performing routine procedures utilizing complex instrumentation and manual methods
  • Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of results with supervisor review
  • Performs and keeps accurate records of equipment maintenance and quality control
  • Refers problems and unusual results to appropriate personnel
  • Performs clerical and support services as needed. Responds to customer needs and requests
  • Participates in proficiency testing of unknowns and internal and external continuing education
  • Participates in continuing education programs related to laboratories
Hematology Lab Specific:
  • Receives acceptable blood specimens sent to laboratory, labels specimen and requisition with laboratory computer number and logs information into computer. Separates specimens to be sent to proper testing station.
  • Measures blood quantitatively using pipettes making necessary dilutions in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Performs automated testing of: CBC, platelet, retic and autodiff; automated body fluid counts; ESR; PT, PTT and Fibrinogen; D-Dimer; urinalysis (macro and micro); cytospin body fluid diff preparation.
  • Performs spun hematocrits using micro-capillary centrifuge, microscopic urinalysis, hemocytometer WBC, CSF and body fluid counts, joint fluid testing for crystals, as well as microscopic differential cell counts.
  • Prepares slides for staining.
  • Consults with supervisory technologist and/or hematologist/pathologist regarding difficult analyses or abnormal finding.
  • Knowledgeable regarding normal and abnormal white blood cells as well as red blood cell and platelet morphology.
  • Knowledgeable regarding cells found in body fluid samples.
  • Knowledgeable regarding standard laboratory math and calculations needed to complete various work assignments.
  • Prepares reagents and controls used in conducting blood, urine and body fluid tests (requires pipetting skills).
  • Records results of tests conducted in laboratory computer. Operates computer terminals to enter and retrieve pertinent laboratory information and reports, corrects inaccurate laboratory data.
  • May assist supervisory technologist. Helps to answer hematology-related questions.
  • Performs quality control procedures accurately and according to procedures, correctly documents corrective action logs and basic instrument maintenance logs.
  • Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures. Notifies supervisor of unsafe conditions. Successfully participates in safety education and competency activities. Responds to and promptly resolves all unsafe conditions.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Science from an accredited college

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Sufficient level of analytical ability and judgement
  • Ability to work in conjunction with other laboratory staff to gain skills and experience in a variety of duties
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with individuals in the lab and hospital
  • Ability to learn several aspects of laboratory operation (testing, LIS, QC)
  • Neat and orderly work habits
  • Careful attention to detail and written protocols
  • Appropriate level of professionalism
  • Perform moderate or complex lab tests accurately and according to procedure.
  • Make appropriate decisions, develop and complete follow-up actions.
  • Document and enter test information accurately.
  • Possess manual dexterity and visual accuracy.
  • Capable of physical exertion, including walking, standing, sitting, and bending or lifting up to 40 pounds.
  • Able to work under stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy.
  • Successfully completes all required technologist competencies.
  • Knowledge of:
Standard safety and infection control procedures including Standard Precautions.

Standard laboratory practice and technique.

Basic anatomy and physiology.

Relevant theory to effectively evaluate accuracy of results.

Basic computer and keyboard skills.

Basic quality and control practice and procedures.

Basic knowledge of current regulatory policies.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

May be exposed to disease-bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals or fumes, other hazards normally associated with a clinical lab setting. Work environment may be noisy or crowded.
