Position Summary

The Benefits Team Lead/Manager is responsible for administration, vendor relations and management, participant support, communication, and compliance of US and Canadian employee benefit plans. The Benefits Team Lead/Manager leads technical support to benefits administration resources, HR staff and external partners involved in the delivery of benefit plans and programs; is the primary resource for analysis, research, and support on benefits issues. Assists the Senior Manager of Benefits with the development of strategic recommendations and support for M&A processes and routine required audits.

Principal Responsibilities

• Manage the day-to-day administration of benefit programs
• Manage all external vendors with proper partnership expectations. Ensure external vendors maintain accurate employee information
• Oversee the annual enrollment process including set-up, communications, vendor/carrier preparation
• Manage vendor/carrier billing and all other accounts payable related payments
• Ensure prompt, user-friendly, and compliant resolution of plan participant issues and inquiries
• Responsible for ensuring that the Company-sponsored employee benefit plans are communicated in high quality, cost-effective and timely manner
• Benchmarks company benefits with other employers analyzing other plans, surveys, and other sources of information. Participates in area and industry surveys. Analyzes results of surveys and develops specific recommendations for review by management
• Prepare benefit documentation and communications
• Assure company compliance with provisions of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act and the Affordable Care Act. Supervise the preparation of reports and applications required by law to be filed with federal and state agencies, such as the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, insurance commissioners, and other regulatory agencies. Review and analyze changes to state and federal laws pertaining to benefits, and report necessary or suggested changes to management
• Provide subject matter expertise in interpreting existing policies and programs, and assist with escalated employee matters, management and HR Business Partners regarding eligibility, claims status, qualifying events, network limitations and other benefits issues as they arise. Researches and response to complex questions regarding interpretation of benefits plans
• Partake in annual renewals, strategy implementation, and special projects
• Provide statistical and census data for external partners
• May include other duties as assigned
• Assist the Senior Benefits Manager:
• By monitoring external changes in the marketplace on benefits and seeking strategies to manage costs
• Periodically evaluate plan designs and provide recommendations for design changes and/or new plans in the health and welfare area
• With designing, planning, and implementation of new or revised benefit plans
• Ensuring compliance with applicable state and federal regulations
• Managing the transition of employee benefits for employees of acquired, merged, or divested companies

Education / Experience Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree and minimum of 4 - 6 years specialized benefits management experience
• Demonstrated experience and skill managing large scale, corporate-wide benefits projects subject to high visibility
• Direct experience managing multiple benefits vendors and benefits administration outsourcing
• Expert knowledge of benefit programs and design
• Experience managing self-funded medical, prescription and dental plans
• Expert proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities
• Experience in the development of benefits communications
• Experience making and/or leading presentations that are clearly understood and well-received
• Handle complex, non-routine matters requiring discretion, independent action and analysis to arrive at decisions that frequently vary from standard procedures
• Strong knowledge of current trends and practices relating to benefits and benefits administration
• Exercise independent judgment under general supervision
• Appropriately operates with frequent access to confidential information
