Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of the John Hope Franklin Research Center, Behind the Veil Outreach Intern will primarily provide research and outreach support related to the grant-funded digitization project of the Behind the Veil: Documenting African American Life in the Jim Crow South archive, scheduled to be published in Spring 2024. Behind the Veil is one of the largest oral history archives containing interviews with African Americans who lived during the era of segregation in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Franklin Research Center director with development of learning modules for web-based teaching and instruction
  • Assist Franklin Research Center director with coordination of outreach efforts to promote the publication of the digital collection included creation of webinar workshops, press release, and social media posts
  • Work with scholars and researchers interested in the collection's content
  • Review interview transcriptions for accuracy
  • Other duties as assigned

Education:

Required: Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree and must currently be enrolled in or a graduate from an accredited advanced degree program.

Experience:

Required:None required.

Preferred: Prior experience working in a special collections library setting and/or completion of at least one course in archival theory; comparable work experience in an archival setting; academic background in Civil Rights history and/or activist background.

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment
  • Attendance at occasional events outside of normal work hours
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds and unpack, shelve and shift large quantities of library materials
  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible

Hiring Rate

$18.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 15.0 hours per week. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 8:30-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule. The Digital Collections Intern will be working onsite at Duke University Libraries. Must work from inside North Carolina.
