Position Overview:

Zoetis world headquarters for Research and Development is in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The R&D team is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Attending Veterinarian to join our research program. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of veterinary care for laboratory animals and livestock ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and ensuring excellent animal welfare. This is a key leadership role that requires extensive and broad veterinary expertise, exceptional communication skills, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in animal care and research support. The Attending Veterinarian will report directly to the Vice President of Global Animal Welfare Compliance and Research Support and will be a member of the Global Animal Welfare Compliance and Research Support Leadership Team.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and maintain a program that is always inspection ready.
  • Ensure continued full accreditation with AAALACi.
  • Responsible for the health and well-being of all animals at the Michigan sites.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a health monitoring program that ensures the well-being of all animals and the safety of people.
  • Collaborate with researchers and staff to support research projects including but not limited to, protocol development, model development, anesthesia, and surgical guidance.
  • Oversee the training of research staff in animal handling, care, and experimental procedures.
  • Participate in institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) meetings and protocol reviews.
  • Ensure the generation and retention of accurate records of veterinary care, research activities, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to veterinary staff and support personnel.
  • Contribute to the mission of Global Animal Welfare Compliance for Zoetis by active participation and leadership of Global Teams and periodic travel (approximately 10%) to domestic and international Zoetis sites.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed to or the ability to become licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Michigan.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an Attending Veterinarian and member of an IACUC.
  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical veterinary care, anesthesia, surgery, and laboratory animal science.
  • Deep functional understanding of federal regulations and guidelines related to the care and use of laboratory animals (e.g., Animal Welfare Act, Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Commitment to promoting animal welfare, the 3R's and ethical research practices.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Board certification or eligibility for board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).
  • Experience with AAALACi and achieving AAALAC accreditation for program(s).
  • 5-10 years' experience as an Attending Veterinarian.
  • Experience with companion animals, livestock, and poultry in research.
  • Experience with biocontainment operations and/or Select Agent programs.
  • Experience in the animal health industry.
