The Department of Anesthesiology has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Assoc. Scientist, SOM to work in Miami, FL. The Associate Scientist, SOM supports the University's research goals and objectives by performing laboratory experiments in his/her areas of interest, expertise, or assignment. Moreover, the incumbent performs various analytical procedures involving method development and application development and synthesis.

  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities including authorship of scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.
  • Publishes in refereed journals in collaboration with department leadership or independently.
  • Supervises research employees and non-exempt staff.
  • Writes extramural proposals with approval of senior managing staff.
  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.
  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.
  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researchers, supervisors, and other relevant staff.
  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree in relevant field
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Collaborates with the PI on the design, conducting, and reporting of research projects.
  • Performs animal pain model set up, electrophysiology, and data analysis. Verifies the correctness of data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
  • Develops hypotheses to be tested and ways of testing it.
  • Maintains complete and organized records of data, experimental protocols, and the results of analyses.
  • Prepares and submits papers on research. Seeks out relevant literature to the research projects.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting. May submit grant proposals in rare circumstances with the approval of the PI, Department Head and Dean.
  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or experiments. Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
  • Complies with established safety procedures and maintaining required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  • Manages research project with other institutions and investigators.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a highly collaborative team
  • Analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of standard laboratory policies, procedures and equipment.
  • This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
  • The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals
