Position Summary

As a member of the research and prospect management team, which is responsible for identifying and profiling high-capacity prospects to achieve the College's fundraising priorities and for advising and supporting gift officers in the strategic management of donor relationships, this position will interpret complex documents such as corporate proxy statements and insider stock filings, and create concise research profiles distilled from biographical information, financial data, news, philanthropic history and other sources. They will demonstrate excellent writing skills, an ability to adapt to shifting priorities, flexibility and resourcefulness, professionalism and strong discretion in working with confidential information.

Position Responsibilities

  • Employ advanced investigative research, data collection, financial and statistical analysis skills (using public records, proprietary systems, purchased or leased databases, published materials and other resources) to proactively identify, research, and assess the philanthropic giving capacity of prospective donors.
  • Accurately write confidential research documents on individual prospects for use by development staff and college leadership including key volunteers.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with development staff to meet their research and portfolio needs. Work with gift officers to review prospect assignments, collaborate on strategies around new donors with wealth capacity, review qualified prospects, provide research updates and train gift officers on new research policies and prospect management procedures.
  • Track daily news reports especially for top donors, prospects, board members, and enter relevant new information into database.
  • Evaluate research requests to determine appropriate level of detail required.
  • Keep abreast of current and emerging trends in philanthropy, fundraising, higher education, and select business industries.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree

4 - 7 years demonstrated experience in advancement research, prospect management, fundraising and/or equivalent experience, preferably in higher education or health care.

Skills
  • Proficiency in conducting donor research with experience in recognizing and assessing wealth indicators and giving capacity
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to manipulate, analyze and synthesize data and clearly present findings.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of moves management processes and procedures.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment and demonstrated flexibility in meeting shifting demands and priorities.
  • High degree of fluency in computer technologies, including proficiency with building Internet and web queries, manipulating and retrieving data from complex database sources, managing news alerts and using electronic subscription services.
  • Continuously developing fundraising knowledge and professional skills through internal/external trainings, research webinars, and local and regional conferences and workshops.

This individual must have a deep understanding of the specialty field of prospect research, including an understanding of the business world, the world of wealth, and how to calculate someone's philanthropic capacity
