The Carver College of Medicine Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist in the neurobiology alcohol dependence, pain and Alzheimer's disease. The position will entail using a variety of cross-disciplinary techniques including mouse stereotaxic surgeries, optogenetics, fiber photometry, 3D imaging, RNAseq, and rodent behavioral assays.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage project assignments independently with oversight by Principal Investigator
  • Design and implement new experiments and troubleshoot protocols
  • Write and publish manuscripts
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students and junior postdocs. Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved
  • Stereotaxic injections of AAV in transgenic mouse models, optical fiber and cannula implantation
  • Use of molecular biology, biochemistry, histology and behavior to assess the relevance of tau pathology to the progression of endophenotypes associated with Alzheimer's disease and alcohol dependence
  • Perform fiber photometry recordings and calcium imaging experiments
  • Optimize and perform behavioral assays to assess affective behavior, anxiety, nociception, cognition and sleep
  • Perform EEG recordings in mice
  • Perform optogenetics and chemogenetic experiments
  • Apply and compete for internal and external grant funding. Contribute to research proposals and financial reports
Select and purchase equipment as needed. Maintain equipment and make or arrange any necessary repairs

Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences.

Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in neuroscience, molecular and cellular biology, or related field
  • Minimum 2 years of postdoctoral research experience in a neuroscience-related field
  • A record of authorship of peer-reviewed original research
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated and able to manage projects independently with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in the following:
    • Rodent behavioral techniques
    • Stereotaxic surgeries
    • Molecular biology techniques
    • Histology and Confocal microscopy
    • Statistical analysis software

Desired Qualifications:
  • Prior experience with intracranial infusions and implantation of cannulae, optical fibers and/or electrodes
  • Prior experience with mouse models of neurological disease
  • Prior experience in EEG
  • Prior experience with nociception/pain testing
