About the College/Unit/Department:

The Learning, Design, and Technology (LDT) program consists of 9 faculty members with a variety of research interests. The LDT program offers M.Ed., Ed.S., and Ph.D. degrees and nondegree certificates; attracts and supports national and international doctoral students; and has strong collaborative relationships with colleagues in STEM disciplines, and quantitative and qualitative research methods.

We offer M.Ed. and Ed.S. degrees focused on K12 education, an M.Ed. focused on instructional design and development, an M.Ed. focused on research, and a Ph.D. focused on using design, research, and scholarship to solve real-world educational problems in multiple contexts.

Position Summary:

The Mary Frances Early College of Education (MFECOE) is seeking to grow and diversify its programs through investments in faculty with expertise using virtual reality, augmented reality, and simulation as pedagogy in health professions education. This position in the MFECOE is part of a four-position cluster hiring initiative over a two-year period in partnership with the College of Pharmacy, and the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. The four hires will focus on applying the principles ofTranslational Education Research by taking best practices and educational research within learning design and technology in education and apply it to health professions training and education. The four hires will be expected to work in partnership to advance this research agenda with these emerging technologies with a special emphasis on obtaining external funding to support the interdisciplinary research. For the current position, we seek candidates who have a vision for the future of the field and the role of emerging technologies (i.e., artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, etc.) in the preparation of health professionals.

The Department of Workforce Education and Instructional Technology in the Mary Frances Early College of Education invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Learning, Design, and Technology (LDT) to begin August, 2024. The position is a tenure-track, academic year (9-month) appointment with the possibility of summer employment. The qualified candidate will join an active, innovative, and collaborative group of scholars focused on research, creation, and use of technologies in the health professions to enrich people's lives in the workplaces and communities of the future. Faculty members in the LDT program have a passion for designing interactive learning experiences, conducting research, publishing in top journals, and seeking external funds to support their work.

Responsibilities:

  1. Establish and maintain a rigorous and innovative line of research exploring emerging technologies in the health professions education.
  2. Obtain external funding to support and sustain your research agenda and the goals of the hiring initiative in data science and artificial intelligence with emphasis in emerging technologies.
  3. Provide leadership in local, national and/or international partnerships.
  4. Provide service to the department, college, university and profession.
  5. Advise graduate students and supervise graduate student research.
Additional Requirements:

  1. An active program of research related to emerging technologies (i.e., artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, etc.) and learning design (i.e., instructional design, learning experience design, etc.) that demonstrates coherent theoretical foundations and potential for high-quality teaching, publications, and external funding.
  2. At least one year of experience (as graduate teaching assistant or instructor of record) teaching instructional design and technology at the graduate level in both face-to-face and online environments.
  3. Evidence of vigorously pursuing external funding to support research in emerging technologies and learning design.
  4. Excellent communication skills.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification:

  1. One or more years of experience applying instructional design in the health professions.
  2. Three years of experience teaching instructional design and technology at the graduate level in both face-to-face and online environments.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

  1. Expertise with using and researching emerging technology applications (e.g., artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality) in the health professions.
  2. Leadership in current efforts and future directions of research and practice in the field.
  3. Proven ability to drive collaboration in health professions education and partner with faculty on translational education research in the health professions.
