Dean of Students Office: The Cultural Center (TCC)

The mission of The Cultural Center (TCC) is to create an environment where students of color, and LGBTQ+ students can critically engage their historical legacies and enhance their educational, intellectual, and personal/professional interest in race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic, and cultural sensibilities. TCC provides a haven for respite and dialogue for students as they navigate their journey at the University of Denver.

Goals:
  • Increase the presence, participation, and support of historically underrepresented student populations within the institution as well as their retention, success, and sense of belonging
  • Provide a community that facilitates success in leadership, scholarship, service, and advocacy through advising, empowerment, cultural enrichment, educational programming, and social development
  • Engage members of the University of Denver community, in collaboration with community partners, in the work of inclusivity and diversity toward service to the public good
Position Summary

The Assistant Director of TCC BIPOC Student Success is a leader in the Dean of Students (DOS) area and the Division of Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence (SAIE). BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous and People of Color. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of TCC BIPOC Student Success and supports the Director in setting the vision for TCC BIPOC student support through an intersectional approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The Assistant Director develops undergraduate and graduate BIPOC student support. The Assistant Director will work in deeply collaborative ways to: (1) create and develop opportunities for students to connect with and through multiple intersectional identities and expressions; (2) Develop and administer inclusive cultural and social support resources for BIPOC undergraduate and graduate students; (3) support and advocate for students from historically underrepresented communities and from a variety of marginalized positionalities; and (4) support TCC in fostering the public good as centrally informed by a commitment to racial, ethnic, cultural, and other social equity outcomes on our campus and beyond.

The Assistant Director will work evenings and weekends, as needed. This position is a full-time, 1.0 FTE position reporting to the Director of TCC BIPOC Student Success.

Essential Functions
  • Supervise graduate student assistants and undergraduate students
  • Lead programming, planning the yearly calendar and signature TCC BIPOC student programs/events
  • Manage communication, social media, and website
  • Develop undergraduate and graduate student support for marginalized students, including affinity group support, and undergraduate student leadership development for TCC staff
  • Support Affinity Lounge and the interfaith prayer lounge
  • Cultivate connection and engagement of undergraduate and graduate BIPOC students
  • Support the Director of TCC BIPOC Student Success in providing leadership and guidance for TCC focused on BIPOC students' visibility, advocacy, and retention
  • Serve as proxy for Director of the Cultural Center, BIPOC Student Success
  • Collaborate on programming with the Director of TCC, Gender and Sexuality
  • Work in partnership with the Director, DOS, Assoc. DOS, SAIE Divisional leadership, the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Inclusion & Equity Education, and First-Generation Student Success Plus
  • In consultation with the Director, other duties as assigned to support the work of TCC, the DOS area, the SAIE Division, and University
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Collaborative and transparent leadership style
  • Knowledge of student development for diverse populations and the ability to translate student development theory and social justice theory into practice
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional ethical standards, current laws, and regulations applicable to students
  • Ability to productively engage across student affairs and academic units, departments, and divisions, including building connections with relevant academic centers, programs, initiatives, courses, and faculty experts
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Race and Ethnic Studies, or related field
  • One (1) or more years of administrative and program leadership experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to and progressive advancement of DEI
  • Leadership experience with DEI in higher education, or large organization
  • Demonstrated advocacy and leadership related to racial, ethnic, gender and/ other intersectional identities
  • Experience with program planning
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with students in higher education
  • Experience supervising, evaluating, and training
  • Experience with strategic planning, assessment, and budget management
Working Environment
  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

  • Physical Activities
  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

  • Work Schedule

    Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with some nights and weekends as needed.

    Salary Grade Number:

    The salary grade for the position is 8.

    Salary Range:

    The salary range for this position is $50,000-$58,000.

    The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
