Position Summary

The Assistant Director provides support to the Pride Center and programs and practices directed toward improving LGBTQIA student outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall LQBTQIA student experience. This position will promote the Pride Center and raise awareness of LGBTQIA excellence and student concerns through coordinating and supporting events/programs, written materials and through representation on campus-wide committees. This position collaborates with partners within the Division of Student Affairs, Division of Academic Affairs, students, staff, and campus/community partners to implement training, programs, and services of the Center.

The Assistant Director will be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues as they relate to LGBTQIA students. This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students and will work with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs for graduate and/or undergraduate students, and University to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability. The Assistant Director provides direction to students and supports advocacy efforts related to the academic and public service mission of San Diego State University.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before 6/30/2023, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper-division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in LGBT Studies, Women's Studies, Ethnic Students or Cultural Studies, Higher Education Administration or a related field
  • Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff
  • Experience participating in and leading movement(s) to create meaningful systemic change
  • Track record operating with an anti-oppression framework and an anti-deficit lens
  • Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture
  • Knowledge and experience working with varied and diverse populations of students
  • Competency in cross-cultural communication
  • Experience in student advising
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice
  • Possesses leadership qualities such as: proactiveness, vision, being a self-starter, positivity and creativity
  • Ability to facilitate difficult dialogues, effectively listen to all points of view and build consensus
  • Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives

Specialized Skills
  • Considerable knowledge of student and leadership development theory, identity development models, group and individual behavior principles, and implications for practice.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.
  • Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events.
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross- cultural needs of LGBTQIA+ students.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact LGBTQIA+ students.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.
  • Ability to assess, design, implement and evaluate effective programming and policies as related to this position.
  • Ability to work well independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction.
  • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities.
  • Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaborate with diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to recruit, train, and support students for work in the Center and for advocacy work on campus.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,691 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,691 - $6,683 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
