Department Summary

One of the goals of Student Activities is to help students get connected and involved on campus, to maximize their collegiate experience. Through a variety of events, services, and resources, the department provides students and student organizations with opportunities to connect to the university and to other students. Student Activities promotes a sense of community and loyalty to the University while serving to enhance the social and developmental growth of students as individuals or as members of organizations. It does this by coordinating annual campus-wide events that promote spirit and tradition on campus, supporting the North Texas Spirit program, and providing services and resources to student organizations.

The student organization team consists of five staff members who work collaboratively to connect students with involvement opportunities and to provide support to student organizations. While each member oversees specific service areas, the team is collectively responsible for developing a comprehensive program for student organizations.

Position Overview

The Assistant Director is primarily responsible for creating and managing administrative services for student organizations.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
-Manage biannual registration process for student organizations (Greek and Sport Clubs)
-Verify eligibility of student organization officers, per University policy, and serve as chair of the Eligibility Appeals Committee
-Create and plan programs to help student leaders become more employable upon graduation
-Coordinate training and resources that address travel, financial, and reputational risk management for student organizations
-Supervise a Coordinator of Student Organizations in their responsibilities, which includes oversight of:
-Registration process for 450 student organizations
-Student organization and advisor training
-Programming to help students get involved in student organizations
-Coordinate the application and selection process for the Golden Eagle Award, the most prestigious award given to UNT student leaders
-Attend designated high-risk student organization events
-Ensure advisor training and recordkeeping complies with Texas Educational Code
-Oversee management of Student Activities Student Organization Funding
-Answer student organization related questions about topics including policy, procedure, successful management, getting involved, etc.
-Ensure departmental representation in programming at Discovery Park and UNT Frisco
-Advise the Student Government Association Elections Board
-Coordinate outreach to various audiences, including student organizations, current students, and incoming students, to promote departmental activities and services
-Supervise, train, and develop a graduate assistant
-Collaborate with student organization team members to develop a comprehensive student organization program
-Conduct presentations and trainings related to student involvement, development, and leadership
-Assist with the development, implementation, and interpretation of policies related to student organization functioning
-Prepare, administer, and monitor budget for respective programs and services
-Facilitate assessment activities that help improve Student Activities and services for student organizations and their officers, members, and advisors
-Create reports for respective programs and services
-Promote and advertise/market Student Activities and respective programs and services to the general campus community
-Develop relationships and work closely with other departments across campus (e.g., Risk Management Services, Center for Fraternity Sorority Life, Center for Leadership Service, Center for Student Affairs at Discovery Park)
-Serve as part of Student Activities staff support at all campus wide events
-Represent Student Activities on division and university committees
-Perform other duties as assigned by the Director

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field and four years' of professional related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

-Ability to supervise fulltime staff and student staff
-Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, due to the required recordkeeping involved
-Knowledge of University policies and procedures, or ability to rapidly assimilate
-Knowledge of risk management and mitigation practices related to events, travel, finances, and reputation
-Knowledge about student organization management and advising
-Knowledge of campus activities programming and event planning
-Knowledge about issues related to student development at the collegiate level
-Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
-Strong communication skills, verbal and written
-Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
-Ability to professionally and effectively advise and mentor college students
-Strong planning and project management skills
-Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
-Ability to work independently and on a team
-Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed

Preferred Qualifications

Masters Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs or a related field
