Position Summary: The Assistant Director of Student Life is responsible for providing a safe and inclusive environment while supporting students, student organizations, Fraternity & Sorority Life (including advising the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils), and student government (CUSA Senate). The Assistant Director will co-advise CUSA Senate, facilitate trainings and presentations, support the day-to-day operations of the Student Center, and assist with Student Affairs initiatives. This role also assists CUSA Senate in budget oversight and management. The Assistant Director will provide administrative support to the operations of student government, student organizations, and the Student Center.

General Purpose: The Assistant Director of Student Life should provide guidance and co-curricular experiences to students, clubs and organizations. Their primary focus will be supporting the fraternity and sorority community, the Clarkson University Student Association and general oversight of student activities and events in the Student Center.

Position Responsibilities

Fraternity and Sorority Life

  • Advise Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council and communicate with their national offices.

  • Oversee Theme Home MOUs, including inventory, assets, and associated agreements.

  • Maintain up-to-date records/reports on each organization, including rosters, grades, housing requests, insurance documents, and event registrations.

  • Communicate and meet with alumni advisors and national representatives on a regular basis to discuss chapter recruitment, conduct, and opportunities for development.

  • Coordinate and provide support for recruitment processes, major fraternity and sorority events, and fraternity and sorority unity initiatives

  • Serve as a liaison between fraternities/sororities and internal/external constituents regarding health and safety inspections at on- and off-campus chapter houses.

  • Educate sorority and fraternity leaders on National Panhellenic Conference and National Interfraternity Conference policies, best practices, and expectations.

  • Serve as a liaison between the University and the Greek Alumni Council.

  • Oversee violations of the Code of Student Conduct involving fraternities and sororities that are not required to go through the Recognition Review Panel.

  • Maintain and review changes to University's Recognition Policy for Fraternities and Sororities as needed and in consultation with University administrators.

Student Government & Organizations

  • Communicate regularly with and provide training to club/organization advisors.

  • Co-advise CUSA Senate (student government)

  • Serve as a mentor to CUSA, student organizations and other student leaders.

  • Coordinate the CUSA shuttle schedule and contract in collaboration with SLC Public Transit, community/university stakeholders, and CUSA.

  • Act as the primary campus administrator for Knight Life (Anthology), including maintaining communication with the vendor.

  • Develop policies, training, and processes for student organization recognition, Knight Life use, and organization/event registration, including events with alcohol.

  • Co-oversee CUSA budget and related processes, including oversight of student organization spending, contract execution, assets, and organization donation accounts

Student Center

  • Review and coordinate requests for Student Center reservations through Event Management System (EMS).

  • Manage Student Center budget, storage rooms and related processes.

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student employees responsible for staffing the Student Center desk with other OSL Professionals.

Student Events/Activities

  • Assess and tabulate community service involvement via Knight Life.

  • Develop and lead service projects and help connect student volunteers with community-based programs and maintain the Volunteering page on the Clarkson website.

  • Participate in Student Affairs and University-wide committees.

  • Assist with the planning, implementation and evaluation of "Spirit Week" festivities in collaboration with student organizations.

  • Assist with coordinating and executing major campus events (i.e. Orientation, Family Weekend, First Saturday, etc.)

Additional Notes: The Assistant Director may be required to perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Life This position requires frequent attendance at evening and weekend programs/events.

Essential Skills:

The Assistant Director must be proficient in G Suite and Office Suite. Effective time management skills are critical for time sensitive processing of budgets and meeting deadlines. The Assistant Director is expected to have strong oral and written communication skills and have the ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals including students, parents, University employees, and guests. The ability to learn quickly, work in a fast paced environment, and perform job responsibilities independently with minimal supervision is important. The Assistant Director must be willing and able to develop and facilitate presentations to small groups and large audiences.

Education:

Minimal: Bachelor's degree.

Preferred: Master's degree or 1-2 years relevant professional experience.

Experience:

Minimal: One to three years of undergraduate or post-baccalaureate experience working within Student Affairs. Internships and student employee experience will be considered.

Preferred: Experience working with college students through fraternities and sororities, student organizations, student government, or similar areas. Experience with Campus Labs Engage, event planning, and/or facilitating presentations.

Physical Demands: Employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Employee must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time, walk, sit, bend and stoop.
