Office of Student Conflict Resolution

Job Summary
Represent the Director of the office in meetings or on committees, handle emergency situations when the Director is unavailable, oversee the investigation of student sexual misconduct cases, supervise professional staff, and assume primary responsibility for the department's Alternative Conflict Resolution Services program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sexual Misconduct Process Oversight
    • In partnership with the Director, monitor all sexual misconduct investigations conducted under the authority of the Senate Committee on Student Discipline (by staff other than the Associate Director) for timeliness.
    • In partnership with the Director, review all evidence collected and all investigative reports for quality, completeness, and clarity.
    • Assist members of the Subcommittee on Sexual Misconduct in running formal hearings.
  • Investigate, adjudicate, and/or otherwise resolve allegations of student misconduct, including allegations that could impact a student's ability to remain enrolled at the university. Specifically:
    • Investigate alleged violations of the Student Code, including Title IX violations and other forms of identity-based harassment, that fall under the jurisdiction of the subcommittees of the Senate Committee on Student Discipline.
    • Directly resolve student and organizational conduct matters through formal adjudication or, when appropriate, informal processes.
    • Prepare students and other involved parties for participation in formal hearings.
    • Serve as an advisor for university hearing panels and appeal committees, as needed.
  • Perform the following administrative functions:
    • Serve in the Emergency Dean on-call rotation.
    • Supervise one or more Assistant Deans of Students.
    • Represent the Director, the Office for Student Conflict Resolution, and/or Office of the Dean of Students in meetings and on assigned committees and task forces
    • Respond to emergency situations when the Director is unavailable.
    • Assist with the design and implementation of assessment tools for Office for Student Conflict Resolution processes and programs.
    • Educate students, faculty, and staff regarding services available through the Office for Student Conflict Resolution by presenting to university groups and departments and developing new outreach opportunities.
    • Teach the Office for Student Conflict Resolution's ethics workshop for students who have been found responsible for violations of the Student Code.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Conflict Resolution Oversight
    • Oversee the provision of conflict resolution services, including mediation, conflict coaching, and facilitated dialogue, to students upon request.
    • Manage the recruitment, training, and assignment of student peer facilitators.

  • Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Master's degree or Juris Doctor degree.
    • Minimum of four years of experience in student affairs in a higher education setting.
    • At least two years of experience investigating complex disciplinary matters, including allegations of sexual assault and/or intimate partner violence.
    • Demonstrated experience working with students in crisis situations.
    • Experience managing highly confidential and sensitive matters.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with conflict resolution, mediation, and/or restorative practices.
    Training, Licenses or Certifications

    Required: Formal training as a Title IX investigator or other civil rights investigator.

    Preferred: Formal training or certification in conflict resolution, mediation, and/or restorative practices.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Understanding of the role of student conduct in a public university setting, including knowledge of higher education case law and relevant federal laws.
    • Working knowledge of conflict resolution strategies.
    Appointment Information
    This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 10/3/2022. Salary range for this position is $70,000 - $80,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
