This position supports the overall costume production build for the School of Theatre Arts (SoTA). Assists with supervision and coordination of student employees, practicum students and overhire guests. Maintains and executes daily task lists, schedules staff, provides stitching, fitting and finishing guidance, and monitors equipment. This is a full time (9 months; August 15-May 15), on-campus position. Generous benefits include health, retirement, and tuition assistance.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Costume Shop Supervisor/Designer with management and guidance of student employees and overhire workers; maintains updated daily task list for production management needs; oversees quality of all tasks, including delivery of correction; administers clear and concise instructions for successful completion; may be assigned as the designer for a process; substitute for Costume Shop Supervisor when supervisor is unavailable, including class instruction, design meetings and department meetings

    Assist with student training; trains work study students at an internship level; trains 105y/106y students in safety practices, basic machine maintenance, basic machine and hand sewing techniques; trains students in wig and hairpiece preparation, craft and millinery construction, safe chemical handling and wardrobe maintenance; train in proper fitting room preparation, etiquette and execution

    Oversee hair and wig designs; provides individual one on one instruction and training with each hair/wig designer for production; manages hair/wig stock including tools and products; creates purchasing list for each show; oversees training of the crew for each production in the proper care and styling of wigs for the run of the show

    Coordinate with Costume Shop Supervisor/designer for rehearsal supervision coverage of costume area during tech weeks and show runs; identifies and schedules students to cover wardrobe, crafts, hair and makeup during each process; coordinates rotation schedule for supervision of students, including any weekend work call that may be needed

    Leads cleanup, project organization, equipment checks, restocking; daily clean up and project organization; weekly equipment maintenance; assess condition of costume and restocks all costume inventory; attends show strike and coordinates organization and return of stock to storage

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required

    Minimum of 3 years work related experience; hand and machine sewing, including operating an industrial serger/industrial irons

    Understands the collaborative theatrical process of design and production

    Physical demands of the job include lifting, carrying, excessive standing/walking; may come in contact with and require safe handling of dyes, paints, and chemicals during costume production.
