Organizational Relationship

The Assistant/Associate Dean for Advancement has a dual report to the Dean of the School of Information Sciences (primary) and to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Advancement in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement (secondary).

Primary Position Function/Summary:

The Assistant/Associate Dean for Advancement will lead and manage a comprehensive advancement strategy for the iSchool that includes alumni, friends, corporations and foundations which is aligned with the iSchool's vision, mission, and goals.

Major Duties and Responsibilities Strategy and planning:

  • Identify, assess, analyze, and design appropriate strategies for approaching prospects and donors and making the appropriate match with the donor's interests and the School's needs/ priorities.
  • Formulate an annual plan with measurable goals and driving the plan to execution through appropriate engagement of staff and faculty.
  • Evaluate and establish fundraising goals for the School on an annual basis and for campus-wide campaigns, in consultation with the Dean and based on the identified potential of the School's donors.
  • Provide strategic leadership for the iSchool's advancement efforts aligned with the iSchool's vision, mission and goals.
  • Develop, manage and evaluate a long-term comprehensive advancement plan that includes alumni, friends, corporations and foundations.
  • Serve on the iSchool's relevant administrative and leadership committee(s).
  • Facilitate effective collaborative relationships and serve as the primary liaison with OVCIA, the University of Illinois Foundation, the University of Illinois Alumni Association, the Office of Public Affairs and other campus advancement officers.

Major gifts
  • Establish and maintain a portfolio of major gift prospects. Maintain a significant travel schedule through the United States.
  • Prepare proposals for donor prospects, including determination of purpose, timeframe, giving vehicle and level of ask for verbal and written proposals based on assessment of the prospect's interest and capacity for giving.
  • Work with the Dean on strategic visits with key major donors.
External relations and stewardship
  • Effectively work and maintain external, alumni, corporate and other relevant organizations and advance partnerships through annual stewardship
  • Coordinate with the iSchool's Communication Office to ensure consistency of message and brand.
  • Ensure gifts secured are acknowledged, recognized and used in accordance with donor's intent.
  • Involve and interest prospects in the mission, life and priorities of the iSchool.
Supervision, management, and budget
  • Hire, manage, train, provide oversight, and evaluate a team of academic professionals and support staff.
  • In collaboration with the school's budget office, plan and administer the budget of the advancement office to ensure operation within fiscal constraints.
  • Oversee the annual funds, stewardship programs, advancement communications, donor relations, capital campaign and advancement events for the iSchool
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • For the title of Assistant Dean, a minimum of seven years of experience in the field of institutional advancement with a demonstrated successful record in fundraising. For the title of Associate Dean, a minimum of twelve years of experience in the field of institutional advancement with a demonstrated successful record in fundraising.
  • Knowledge of the major components of advancement including development, communications and public relations, alumni relations, and special events.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Understanding of major donor prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information
  • Strong relationship management and interpersonal skills
  • Supervisory experience or demonstrated leadership experience leading an advancement team or in related work experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree
  • Advanced knowledge of planned giving fundraising vehicles.
  • An understanding and commitment to the research, teaching and outreach missions of the University of Illinois and of the School of Information Sciences.
  • Completion of Plus Delta Discipline of Frontline Fundraising program or similar training in academic advancement best practices.
