Adjunct Lecturer or Instructor

Siebel Center for Design
The Grainger College of Engineering

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Siebel Center for Design (SCD) is unique among design centers in the United States. Our mission: To practice, model, and teach design thinking, using human-centered design to reimagine our campus, community, and collective world.

An industrious and generative team of individuals works collaboratively at SCD to advance this mission. Nestled between the Gies College of Business, the College of Applied Health Sciences, Ikenberry Commons, and the Art + Design building - with the College of Education and the UIUC athletic complexes a short distance away - Siebel Center for Design is at a crossroads on our campus and is a catalyst for and driver of multidisciplinary collaboration and study. Our 60,000 square foot facility provides space for programming, instruction, prototyping, events, meetings, and more, and serves as a human-centered design focal point bringing together people from all disciplines, cultures, and realities.

Siebel Center for Design at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) invites applicants for Adjunct Lecturer/Instructor positions ranging from 0% affiliate through part-time (50%) appointments, based on course demand and staffing. These are non-tenure-track, renewable appointments, on a 12-month service basis. Candidates may be offered an affiliate 0% non-service appointment initially; when a teaching/project need is determined, salary and service will be commensurate with course load. Average payment for a typical 16-week course is $2,000-$4,000 per credit hour, to be negotiated based on % of appointment. Typical courses run 2-3 credit hours over 16 weeks.

The individuals in these roles will be responsible for teaching the core courses developed by SCD in design thinking and human-centered design in support of a variety of efforts on the UIUC campus related to certificates, minor and major programs. The selected candidates will join a growing multidisciplinary and collaborative team engaged in human-centered design in higher education.

The title of Instructor requires a Bachelor's degree. The title of Lecturer requires a terminal degree (PhD, MFA, MDes, or equivalent). Experience in design thinking and human-centered design required; experience in social innovation, technology innovation and/or healthcare innovation would be preferential.

To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by February 6, 2023. Early applications are strongly encouraged as interviews may take place during the submission period. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and accepted until all positions are filled. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
